Well, I guess I'll do Crossfit "Lite" like I've done in the past - mixed with running and some "traditional" workouts. There are some aspects of the program that don't make a lot of sense to me. A perfect example is Monday's WOD (30 muscle-ups -- or 120 pullups + 120 dips) is followed by Tuesday's workout (which includes 100 pullups). Is it really beneficial to do that many pullups on two successive days?

The first rule of Crossfit is you do not talk about Crossfit!

Sure! If your training for a contest in which you have to do alot of pullups on consecutive days
I don't know why @fit would be called a program, at least the WODs. There is no periodization nor pattern. I get the whole random/chaos in training as in life thing but doing 300 reps in one plane of motion and zero in the opposing may not be the brightest idea ever

hahahahaha
I'm an old-school bastard. I classify training methods by their place on the energy system continuum. Crossfit looks like it's somewhere along the middle, albeit closer towards the oxidative realm. It's good to know y'all youngins are still trying to get creative with CARDIO.

FYI: The writer of the NY Times story is Virginia Heffernan, sister of Andrew Heffernan. If you've read his blog or communicated with him online, you know he's an all-around good guy who, I suspect, pointed his sister toward some of his favorite sites, including this one and MPF.
My traffic has been way up since that story ran, for which I'm very grateful.

I was wondering what the tie was and now I know.

I'm really just intrigued by their choice of words ' deep think' forum.
it certainly is a deep and material forum with pertinent information, but for proffessional writers i thought a bit funny :-).
And congrats JP and all the admins and site editors!

Before I came here it was only moderately contemplative.

Not trying to jack the thread, because I am really happy that this forum and Lou's blog got mentions in the NYT and that traffic is up because of it; but just one final correction about Crossfit (can you tell I'm really into it? ) - when you say there is "no periodization or pattern", you are wrong. There is a ten-page article available on the site which explains the program and its methodology and sequence in very transparent detail. (Although, given the virtually infinite variety of exercise combinations, it is still not possible to accurately predict tommorrow's WOD today.)
All I can tell you from my own experience is, it works and was exactly what I needed and wanted for my own goals.

Then by all means have fun!
I've done @fit and can appreciate some ideas there (and let's be honest, none of them are Glasshole inventions). I've been following the site since 2001 and can say though that what is considered progression there and what most would think of as progressing in the context of programming are different.
Nothing works forever.

My Two cents:
Here's the lamest part of that article for me:
"This is exercise not for vanity or for longevity but for an imagined moment of heroism that may never come."
I have NEVER swung a kettlebell or done a deadlift thinking that I would perform some great feat of "heroism".
What about emergency situations where strength is very very important?
I think more along the lines of:
" If I were out hiking with my nephew William, and he sprained his ankle, will I be strong enough to carry him back to the car?"
"If I have a flat tire on the road, is my grip strength sufficient to turn the crow bar to get the nuts off the tire rim, AND get them back on?"
"when I am in my 60s, 70s, 80s, will I be able to carry my own groceries?"
I don't think Ms.Heffernan or the "Stairmaster chumps" or the people who run on the treadmills to nowhere get it:
You must think of the long haul, not just the next pound.
