Kettlebells
Hi everyone,
Just wondering how many people actually use kettlebells? And what are the advantages over dumbbells?I dont know alot about them or infact how to use them,i have seen some demos but not too sure if there worth buying?
Also what weight should i buy,i feel i am pretty strong so i was thinking maybe 24kg or 30kg?

I use them and I love them. I can't imagine my workouts without them at this point. I think they are worth buying for sure. A pair of 24's would be great for starters.

My clients love them. Definitely a good creative tool.

Anyone have video links of kettlebell exercises? I'm thinking of getting some KB's, and I'd like to have some videos to reference. Thanks.

Here are a few of Steve Cotter and his KB coach Valery Fedorenko
YouTube - Steve Cotter Seminar- Long Cycle
YouTube - Kettlebell Monster Lifts
I did a coaching cert with Fedorenko and his coaches, who do what's called Girevoy Sport (or kettlebell sport) and they are extremely knowledgeable and impressive.
Very efficient technique and an excellent way to build strength endurance.

One is perfectly fine. In order to use 2 at the same time, I think you'll have to build up a pretty big base. I've got a 16KG and a 20KG and I'm still working a lot with the 16KG. It's a whole different game with KB's and consistency is probably the best thing to do with them.

Thanks for the info.
I actually went into a sports store today i checked out the kettlebells, they feel really heavy for only 16kg compared to dbs!
I think i will start with 16kg and get my form right!
So where do you guys put them in your workouts? Also what exercises do you include?

Snatches and jerks are the standard lifts but swings are the foundation for both.
There are many other exercises you can do of course but not many others are fundamentally different than doing them with DBs.
The Full Kontact forum is a great resource.

Just be careful when searching for exercises because theres a lot stupid shit being done with them whats up there with squatting on a swiss ball. Stick to the basic swings, presses, and ab movements and ditch the two KB one-handed party tricks.

Have you ever tried kettlebell juggling?
I don't have any clients do it but it's fun to mess around with.
You know, we're allowed to have fun with weights sometimes
Juggling 170lb KBs?!?

I'll just pile on here. A 20kg might be a great one to start with for you. Check out Lifeline USA Functional Fitness Equipment 1.800.553.6633 for pretty good KB prices.
Good foundation exercises are swings (one and 2 hand), cleans, snatches and jerks. They excel as a strength-endurance tool and allowed me to remain in outstanding condition in terms of cardio without running (I don't like it). To quantify that statement, I cut my 2 mile run time (for Army PT test) by over a minute in 18 months and I only ran maybe 6 times in that period. Granted, that's not huge, but I wasn't focusing on running at all.
A bigger benefit than the crossover aerobic benefit is the anaerobic benefit. My recovery time has never been better. I gave my soldiers what I would consider a medium workout last month...half a dozen puked...ooops! Most of them are 10 years+ younger than me. It is the National Guard though, most of them don't workout much on their own if any...I'm trying to change that! Enjoy your KB, they're addictive, between my wife and I we have eight now.
