Default Week Off - really?

I have 5 workouts left in my first ever 12 week weight program (stoked on my results and will post when done) but told I should take a week off after I am done... which will be the end of next week...
What does that mean? I am assuming I should stay out of the gym, but does that mean no cardio, etc? Should I continue to keep my calories up? Sorry, newbie here, my rate of dumb questions will slow soon!

I usually have my clients do some sort of active recovery. If they have a walking program they do on their own, they continue that, if they play basketball or some other sport, they continue that. I try to tell them to treat themselves to a massage. They do contiune to eat their normal diet however.

What Chris said. Easy recovery type activities. Do things that you find enjoyable, that make you feel uplifted. Don't sit on your ass, but don't do HIIT either. Eat your same diet. It's a week of growth and recovery that will set you up for a great start to your next program.

what i find is good on delaod weeks is to go into the gym work on your technique, try some new exercises, or do alot of isolation work for smaller muscles (curls, lat raises etc) -this should be okay as purpose of rest weeks is to allow your nervous system to recover an none of the above should stress your CNS

Go by how you feel. It takes time to really learn your body.

Sometimes, I take a full week off. 100% off and i have found this to help me. I have found personally, as soon as my sleep begins to suffer (cant fall asleep or stay asleep), i have about 2 weeks before shit hits the fan. A week off.. cures it.

I like a week off every now and then ... sometimes I just get mentally stale and getting out of the gym is a recharge on the battery.

It depends on you. YOu may or may not need a week off

There is no golden rule that you must take a week off

Coach, here is the problem with that thinking...some people may not know for certain. They may not be able to read their bodies with precision and by the time the pain starts, it's too late. It's going to take a lot longer than one week to recover.

I tend to take the week regardless, just to be safe. I've had lateral epicondylitis (also bursitis). I don't want to chance that pain again. I'm a wuss.

Especially a newbie...he's coming off his "first ever 12-week weight program."
