Default YOGA Help!

Hello!

I am looking for some Yoga help. I have been doing Yoga for about 3 weeks, once a week. I am horribly not flexible, to the point where I can't do the positions correctly. I do see some flexibility gains and feel the stretches helping.

Should I start doing it more than once a week? Or should i try something else?

i really like the meditation aspect of it and would like to keep doing it, but I feel like such an ass because i can't do everything!

Hey Bliss,
Get your bad self some Yoga Zone DVDs. They're great for beginner level stuff. I have shows from the One Network taped off and I use them all the time.
I think if I went to a class, I'd still keep trying to do better than everyone else ... that's just my damned Type A nature!
I like to practise yoga at least once a week, but sometimes I throw in another 30 minutes here and there.
You're right, though ... the meditative purposes are incredible.

To quote Bill Hartman if you enjoy yoga great, now go do something useful.

There are many ways to increase flexibility.

I think Kuri hit the nail on the head. Why are you doing Yoga, for flexibilty or because you enjoy it. If it is for flexibility, there are other ways. If it is for enjoyment than keep doing it and don't worry about not being able to do all the moves. That is true with any new endeavor. If you like it, keep at it, and you will get better.

Welcome to the boards!

Stick with going once a week, but like the previous poster says, grab a DVD so you can do a work out or two between classes. I had a ton of physio issues a year ago and was recommended to get into yoga. I couldn't do a push up without pain and couldn't touch my knees I was so stiff!!! I ended up loving it - and can palm the floor now and have been doing weight training for the past 2 months! Besides giving me a basis of strength to progress from, it improved my posture a ton. Your yoga studio should have some beginner videos for sale, if not amazon has tons.

I am lost? Yoga is a supplement to my work out. I typically "run" 1 minute brisk walk 1:30 jog/run for 30 minutes and 100-150 crunches a day.

That's not helping much either. Trust me - I help people lose fat/gain flexibility/get in better general health for a living.

Read this article: Step Away from the Treadmill by our own Lou Schuler.

Then click on the link on the right side of JP's main page and buy New Rules of Lifting for Women. (or New Rules of lifting if you are a guy)

If you have limited flexibility, once a week is probably not enough no matter what you choose to do - especially if you fall back into the movement patterns that create inflexibility in the first place. You know, the harmful things most of us are required to do too much of, things like, oh, sitting for instance!

Yoga is great for the mind as you know, core strength, flexibility, and creating the mind/muscle "connection" or awareness. It wasn't until I started doing Yoga that I became aware of my bad posture without having to see it in a mirror. It also made me aware of where I was carrying stress. I started noticing that even while lying in bed watching TV my right trap would be tense. I'd never noticed that before. I must have walked around for years with one shoulder up around my ears.

You're not supposed to be able to start out doing all the asanas. Nor should you be able to even after years of practice! You gotta start at the beginning and that's gonna be a different place for everyone. And, I don't know about you but even after I gained flexibility I was having difficulties because I lacked the upper body strength required for many things I wanted to try. It took me over a year to get into a back bend - coming from the floor. When I finally got up there I nearly hurt myself because I was so damn excited.
