I am super excited for one of my training partners so I thought I would make a post about it. Plus I get to brag about the athletes I get to workout with.
This past week Worlds Strongest Man wrapped up. It won't be on TV until Christmas but I got to see an advanced preview because Dave Ostlund (the training partner in question) just got back. He ended up taking 9th overall out of all of the athletes. He took 3rd place in the stones and also had a great run at a couple medleys. This is huge for him because just two years ago he was an amature competing in NASS shows.
I am super pumped for him and all the oportunities that this will bring in. Plus I get to say I train almost weekly with a guy from WSM!
Here is a picture of him deadlifting in the Semi-finals:
I have no doubts that you'll be joining Dave soon, Danny.

That's cool Danny, thanks for posting! Tell your partner congrats, and y'all keep up the hard work.
Great pics - I'm sure those guys didn't stand out in China...
So the Mariusz won again huh?
I dunno but something tells me he isn't 100% natural

The drug stories Dave was telling are pretty crazy. Some of these guys brag about the amount they use. Kind of scary.
Kuri - they stood out bigtime, and people mobbed them wherever they went for pictures and autographs. A couple of the guys almost didn't fit into the hotel showers.
It would have been so awesome to just watch all these huge guys react to such a different culture.
Rip - Yeah its Mariuz. He is also about the favorite athlete in Poland and is a millionare because of it. He is their Michael Jordan. Is has also taken 1st place in the 26 contests he did this year. How crazy is that!
Danny

Q it was in a smaller town in China, can't remember the name off hand, I think close to Bejing although I could be making that up.
The stone pedestal in the pic says "Chengdu".
They shoulda made it more interesting by bringing in some Shaolin monks and doing a Shaolin vs. the world themed competition

I think that to say that the "gear" is making these guys work wonders is really giving way too much credit to steroids. Sure these guys wouldn't be capable of nearly the amount of work they are performing without the stuff, but I think it is probably more a combination of work ethic and genetics that has made them successful. Whether or not you agree or disagree with steroid use, I think it is really trivializing the accomplishments these guys have made. There are tons of guys taking deadly amounts of steroids, but very few who are able to reach world class status. Props to Pudz and all the other guys who competed, because with or without steroids these guys would be impressive, despite the fact that they might not have as much commercial appeal without the steroids.
That was an intelligent and well thought out post bobby! You are absolutely correct! I was kind of just trying to make light of the situation of Mariuz. It's so well documented about his 'roid use and bans, etc.
However I completely understand what you're saying. If I was given the chance to meet and workout with Mariuz, I'd pee myself. I, of course, over stated (light heartedly) what 'roids can do for you. You obviously MUST have the base power/strength/athletice ability in order for juice to push you over the top.
I would somewhat compare it to what younger/newbie gym-goers think that creatine will do for you. At least years back, a lot of younger/misinformed guys thought if they took creatine it'd be some miracle muscle builder. They soon learned that you've got to bust your ass before creatine will even start to help you at all. Much the same with 'roids I'm sure.
I hope I didn't offend Danny or anyone with my original post. It really was intended just light-heartedly but now I see my error and I do apologize. Seriously, thanks for making me look like an ass bobby. j/k

They could add in the event wherein one puts the tip of the spear against their throat and bends the spear by pressing forward. And a bit 'o breaking.

I don't like the creatine/steroid analogy. And, while we can recognize the inherent talent of these guys, the steroid use always puts a big, and I mean BIG, question mark in the equation, no matter how you slice and dice it. If (and again its a big IF) the use has made the difference between a superior athlete among superior athletes and a winner among superior athletes, then its bogus pure and simple. Flame me if you like, but that's the way I see it.
