Default Footwear for working out

Maybe a dumb question, but new to working out, and have noticed alot of guys wearing shoes that have zero support at the gym - pretty much slippers! I know for deadlifting you want pretty flat shoes, but does this not compromise your ankles? Should you wear other shoes for exercises outside of the deadlift?

Not an expert by any means...but there is a lot on this here if you do a search...most weightlifting is done better barefoot - for practicality and hygiene...Nike Frees are the best option. Love mine and will never lift in anything else again!

It doesnt compromise your ankles, it strengthens your ankles. The more artificial support you give them, the less they need to work to stabalise you.

I really like my Nike Frees, especially for single-leg work. I wear them to squat and deadlift too, but I know EC has said he likes to dead in Chucks rather than Frees. He thinks Frees still have too much heel. I'm just not gonna change shoes in the middle of a workout. Besides, I'm not competing. Tony Gentilcore has said to try deads barefoot.

The whole idea behind these guidelines is to strengthen your feet and ankles and teach them to do their job (just like you would any other muscle in your body). This thread has some good discussion on this topic: Barefoot training?

I'm buying into the idea that that overly supportive shoes have created more foot/ankle problems than they've solved. Mike Robertson discussed this topic in his Bulletproof Knees manual too (basketball players and the high incidence of high ankle sprains).

I lift at home so I can go barefoot. For in the gym, go with the Frees or the Chucks. I think I'd use the Frees for stuff where I'm moving my feet, aka lunges, step-ups, etc. and the Chucks for squats and deads.

I do everything in nike frees, except heavy deads. The frees mess with my deadlift lockout and i have no idea why.

They still have a bit of a heel, so it could be subconsciously making you feel like you're leaning forward.

I wear frees for running, jumping, and for deadlifting, but I kick them off and go barefoot when I lift near my max. Otherwise I feel like I'm being pulled forward.

I have basketball shoes and crosstrainers for squat day. A little heal helps, but I think I'd squat better with some weightlifting shoes with an even bigger heal. I'm in a training group with Charles Staley, and he's bugging me to get some. He uses these: do win

it's because the heel pitches you forward

one of the days i was DLing with a trap bar, and they told me to take the frees off, because right around lockout, it was pitching me forward. It ended up working, and no problems since then.

Wow the new Do-Wins are sooo much cooler than the old ones! Dammit now I want to new style.

Oh and they are great for squatting and overhead pressing. Suck ass for deadlifting though. I wear them for any lowerbody training that isn't heavy deadlifting from the floor.

BY recommendation of Eric Cressey and several others, I got Chuck Taylor All-Stars and I'm not dissappointed in the least.

I recommend them when you need to have footwear. Inexpensive and effective.

Ditto, I use them too. For some reason I find it easier to activate my glutes when doing single leg exercises when I'm wearing my chucks.

I wear chucks because that's what Danny wears and he's my hero.

Bringing several pairs to the gym (to only lift) seems almost OCD

if you can feel muscle groups being 'activated' this is the time that you put more weight on the bar

My feet are so damn wide (eee) I have to wear Chucks the size of clown shoes. They're a little narrow...

I wear 13s and have wide feet. I look like Bozo even when I'm barefooted.

I wear a pair of Vans. Good support and they're flat. We can't barefoot it at our gym, I think once they allowed it but there is always someone walking around with crotch foot or something.

I used Chuck's a lot in the last year. Before then I just wore running shoes. I also in the last year really finally started getting into heavier squating and deadlifting. I've also done a little competing.

This is what I've learned about footware. Running shoes are made for running. The cushioning flattens out faster, therefore ruining the shoes quicker if you use them for heavy lifting. I have a pair of Pearl Izumis for running.

For lifting I started out with Chucks. They work. They are very stable, tie them tight. I did have a problem with them. The heavy weight made my arch fall flat, which gave me back pain. I didn't understand why I had so much back pain until I hurt my knee squating. I talked to my chiropractor about my knee, and I had back pain in the opposite side of my back from that knee already. He took a mold of my feet and did foot prints, I had developed flat feet from using the Chucks and heavy weight.

Insurance paid for custom molded orthotics. I put them inside Nike Free cross trainers. Knee pain is gone, back pain is gone. My feet can't handle that sort of weight on their own, so I have to give them support. BUT it is rock hard support and not cushioning.

I use a pair of flat soled pumas I had sitting around, now weathers getting warmer though I think I'll give barefoot lifting a shot.

Ugly is just too much of an understatement.

Lovecraft's use of the word hideous, as in something-from-the-void type hideous starts to approach the essense of your Chucks.

If they were any uglier, the village would band together with torches, chase them back to the castle where the good doctor created them and torch the structure to the ground, with the offenders still inside.

And for good measure, they would get the local priest to sanctify the ground to ward off any future evils.
