Default New to exercising

Hello, everyone.

I am somewhat new to the exercise bit. I am male, 23, 5'11" and 175lbs and am wanting to get into it to help give me something constructive to do in my spare time and become a little healthier. I would also like to build a little muscle and tone up some. I'm not springing for a gym right now because I want to first prove that I can stick to something simple first.

The easiest way to slip into a routine for me would be to start running daily; I figure I would start off by running a mile or two (gauge my current limits so I don't end out running around with two sore legs) and increase from there. I really don't have any questions here

I have some dumbbells but I'm not sure of any (helpful) exercises to do with them. I'm wanting to work everything.

And this wouldn't be complete if I didn't bring up those exercises from grade school: jumping jacks, push ups, squat thrusts, and sit ups. Do any of these have a place in the mix?

Also, are you supposed to eat before or after exercising?

If you are eating regulary then the isn't a big difference between eating after or before training.

You can do heaps with dumbells even if they are light. There was a thread the other day with libraries or exercises. Check that thread and you will see the options are endless.

Running is a good form of aerobic training if thats what you like. I wouldn't force anyone to run if they didn't like it and wouldn't stop anyone running if thats what they enjoyed.

As for bodyweight exercises you listed they have a place in training and combined with you db exercises they would suit nicely.

For a program using bodyweight and your db's just google bodyweight exercises and there is heaps of options. If you wanted to buy a program i'd head over to turbulence training and check out craigs bodyweight workout manual. Not sure of the cost but that used to be around $60. You can find most of that stuff on google though.

Welcome to the boards and exercise.
