Mahler’s Monday Morning Motivator # 186 – Honey, is that you?
Mahler’s Monday Morning Motivator # 186 – Honey, is that you?
Honey, is that you?
The weather in the east and around my area has been not only unseasonable, but downright unreal. Today, October 22, the temperatures are slated to reach into the low eighties. I love the warm weather and fear that mother nature is personally lulling me into a false sense of security so that I won’t recognize that one-two punch of winter until it is all too late. She is like that, you know.
Well, life in general can take a page from mother-nature’s notebook, for life, too, can sneak up on us and catch us when we are unaware. It has happened to the best of us. We are confident in the way our lives are going. We settle into a good daily routine and go about our day-to-day activities or our training with little thought to how effective we are or should be. Perhaps we begin to make little compromises, those little concessions to convenience and time constraints, without really taking notice of the minor changes they put into motion. Before long, you guessed it. Life sneaks up on us. A look in the mirror or a step on the scale has us frantically mouthing the words “what the hell happened?”
What is more puzzling about this phenomenon is that for some reason, we are all too willing to play along. We are like a character in an old horror movie. You know the one. The girl makes her way along a forbidding hallway. She comes to an ominous looking door. Her candle blows out. She hears a creaking noise and a low, blood-curdling growl from the other side of the door. So what does she do? She says something like, “honey, is that you?” and, well, you know the rest. Several screams and a few pints of blood later and we are all wondering why the hell she didn’t just turn tail and run.
Exactly like that character, we can sometimes reach a point and wonder just why the hell we didn’t do a 180 and head in the other direction. We blindly move forward into that season of beer, wings and pizza, those comfortable afternoons and evenings in front of the TV watching someone else do our exercise for us, plunging non-stop into the holidays just ahead. We begin to plot against ourselves, making compromises and formulating elaborate excuses. We start our own journey down that forbidding hallway. Soon our candle begins to flicker. There’s the door just ahead of us. Our self-betrayal is on the other side waiting to pounce. “Honey, is that you?” Our hand is on the knob. We turn it. We open the door and . . .

How accurate!! It's certainly happened to me on more than one occasion!
Thanks, John.

But I'm sure one little cookie won't hurt, will it? Just one?
Good and timely reminder, John!
