Default Buying a barbell

Pretty simple. I'm stupid and ended up bending my cheapo bar. I wanted to buy a new one anyway, so now at least I have an excuse :p Obviously, I want to keep the price as low as possible, but if I'm going to be investing in a good bar, I'm not going to be cheap.

So, any advice on which to buy and where?

Thanks!

Well the best overall bar would probably be the texas power bar. You can get it for around 200 if you shop around

This is where i got mine. The guy that runs the place is very nice

Price certainly looks right on these:

http://www.newyorkbarbells.com/im-0022tp.html

I use an Ivanko power-bar most of the time, its not a bad bar, but its not that cheap and its a little to stiff for my liking for alot of things.

Ive bent about 3-4 bars over the last year, always el-cheapo bars. Now, I am nice to the gym and I just use the shitty bars for rack-lockouts and rack-deads because imo there are what kill bars.

buy from Jesupgym. I've heard good things about their bars from everyone, and it's really cheap.

I wouldn't buy from NYBB again, EVER. I hear that their bars, like SSB suck. Plus, the two items that are made from tds that i got from them either broke, or didn't fit like they were supposed to.

http://www.jesupgym.com/products.htm?cid=12

$30.00 shipping for a bar to indiana for me. so, it still beats anywhere in quality or price, i believe.

What are you using the bar for?

For slow lifts, consider the Texas Power Bar seconded.

If you want to learn the fast lifts, look at Pendelay bars which seem to be well regarded for Oly lifting training.

I'll be using the bar for basic lifting: squats, deadlifts, bench, rows, etc. Its the weekend so I sent out emails to get a basic idea of shipping for each of the two. So far, I've heard back from Jesup and they said $30. So, it looks like their bar will be ~$150 and the Texas Power Bar will run somewhere around $200. I really don't know the difference between the two.

The Jesup Bar: OPB86M 7' Olympic Power Bar (B)
1500lb test. Has a center knurl and roll pin ends. There are no bolts to come loose and with deep knurl this bar is built for the toughest use.

Texas Power Bar: 7' polished steel, 1 1/8" diameter, 1500 lb. static test competition Power Bar. Deep diamond knurling with 4" center Knurling. IPF approved.

Thats olympic as in it holds olympic size plates. The Jesup bar does have center knurling.

Center Knurling is overrated. Build a shelf for the bar youll have no problems.

So, does anyone see much of a difference between the TPB and the Jesup bar? They're both tested at 1500lbs. Keeping in mind that I'm the only one that will be using the bar and that my lifts are nowhere near there (yet :p right now the most it'll see is 350ish), I don't really know how much of a difference there could be. I'm totally clueless when it comes to this, so thanks for letting me pick your brains

the main differences
the jesup bar has no center knurling. Which helps hold the bar on squats
The jesup bar is thiner and more bendy. and the texas power bar is more stiff. You probably wont notice a difference in till you move some big weights

I guess I'll wait to hear back from irondawg on shipping or give them a call tomorrow to see how much the TPB will come out to cost me. Since the Jesup bar does have center knurling and the weights I'm lifting won't really bring the difference in stiffness into play, I'm leaning towards the Jesup bar. I didn't have problems with el-cheapo bar's stiffness yet, so I don't think that'll be a big problem. $50 can go a long way. :p

I would invest into two bars. One w/ and one w/o center knurling. The one w/o would be good for front squats (reducing bar rash on the throat).
