Not only Mahler, but lots of other very knowledgeable people stepped in with criticism and sometimes with words that I wasn't too happy to hear (yes, I have an ego), but it was all for my of the post kind of dampens the friendliness. own well being.
I can't help but notice the lack of a "constructive" before criticism.

I understand that people are giving you a lecture (well deserved)

but you offended a respected member of this forum.
Meh, I doubt he was offended. He's not a teenager, therefore he has mental fortitude.

Quote:
Nevertheless I believe that everybody will still help you with all the questions you need, just hang in there and take the beating and it will all be forgotten when they see you with a good attitude.
Oh, I have a good attitude, but only when other posters give me a reason to have one. For the record, I won't have a "good attitude" until it comes naturally, not just to please everyone and be accepted.

Quote:
Hang in there and don't stop posting, this is a very good and very organized forum and you won't find any other place like it.
Yeah, it is nice and organized. No denying that. I wouldn't say I like it, but that's because I've spent little time here.

Quote:
And welcome to the forum!
Heh. Thanks. Although given the rest of the post, it's hard to believe you mean that.

*Insert long post from Lost_Dog here*
Thanks, I'll look into that.

Quote:
first my smart ass comment:
grow up and grow some balls.
I see no reason to at the moment.

Quote:
now for my advice:
aside from others have said you should also add some form of rowing movement to your routine.
Rowing movements? Like the row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream kind? >_>;

Quote:
it's good that you're eating fruits and vegetables. it would be good idea to add some lean meats for protein in there as well...if you haven't done so already.
Is fish a lean meat? It actually tastes good unlike turkey and ham and bland crap like that.

Quote:
to have a proper lifting program with no imbalances you should consider the following:
push/pull movements for upper body
hip/quad dominant movement for lower body
So what exercises would provide for both of these?

Quote:
however, if your set on some endurance type routine, then interval running would be a great way to go.
Any man needs both.

Quote:
about mahler...he was just being on point and blunt. never meant as disrespect.
Alright, now I'm starting to feel a little bad.

Quote:
also...pick up a copy of the book of muscle. great source of info and workout routines that you and your mother can do.
Heh, this is a lot to take in... but alright. And everyone in my family (All seven in the nuclear) has at least a passing interest in fitness.

Quote:
Try this:
Day 1
Bench Press
Vertical Bench Press
Butterflys
Tricep extensions

Day 2
Walk briskly - 30 min.

Day 3
Reverse crunches
Weighted situps
The bicycle
Pushups
Curls
Prison exercises

Day 4
Walk briskly - 30 min.

Day 5 - off

Day 6 repeat cycle
Sounds good to me, but if my workout is inherently flawed, I'm not sure cutting it up would help any. =/ Any comments? If this would work, it sounds great. It's a lot easier to handle than 12 exercises right after another.

Quote:
You began your workout description by saying that you run, but that mom suggested brisk walking. This to me, sounded like you were talking about the over protective mom that many of us knew growing up. "Don't play with that stick. You'll poke your eye out!" Hence, my comment.
Oh... heh, no, I was blessed with a completely non-annoying mom. Even if she was, I'd probably just ignore her advice but allow her to keep on giving it.

Quote:
Trying to put it in a way a young person would latch on to, I said it basically "sucked."
If I ever turn into the average 18-year old, go ahead and shoot me. o_o

Quote:
As for the workout, it seemed to me to have no rhyme or reason. 3 abs exercises, 3 upper body presses, only one leg exercise, isolations for arms and an undefined "Prison" exercise.
It is without rhyme or reason. I just threw a lot of exercises together that seemed fine on their own, assuming that together they'd add up to something well-balanced. A prison exercise... take two dumbells, hold them at your sides, bring them up to your chest, pump your arms in the air over your head, then bring the dumbells back down to your chest and then back down to your sides.

Quote:
You may think they are effective and have stated that you won't give them up, but an experienced lifter knows that eventually you will fail to see the gains you seek.
Well, I was a little reluctant to think of my 132 exercises as being pointless... but they aren't "pointless", they just didn't add up to the most effective regime available... and in any case, it did at least highlight the fact that I have a decent work ethic despite my laziness, and that means more to me than whether I have the ability to assemble a great workout by myself.

Quote:
And that advice does come from a friend, or at least someone who has your best interest in mind.

(Take my advice and I will let you be the judge as to whether I should use my tag line "In Fitness and Friendship")
... *rubs eyes* Don't make me cry, you poetic bastard. Yeah, you can definitely use it, and I apologize for being too harsh.

Another CLASSIC reply under not so ideal conditions from a CLASS GUY!!!
It was a good reply, but the conditions were very ideal. The only person not on his side was a semi-newbie.

*insert post from Gobbla*
Wow, more information... x_x Guess I should be grateful, but it's a bit overwhelming. I'll look into it, anyway.

Quote:
Protein is good, if meat is boring then you can do a rice/beans combo to help you get some protein in.
Kickass, I like rice and beans.

Quote:
Another if I was in your shoes would be to work on overcoming the "I've been tired/lazy". The best advice in the world isn't going to help you if you don't want to get out there.
Well, I can probably manage to get it done more consistently once I no longer have a twelve-exercise lineup.

Quote:
Post some body stats.
What's there to post aside from BMI, height, and weight?

Quote:
mahler...you are a sage amongst mere mortals. that reply was just classic.
He's not old enough to be a sage. Maybe in twenty years...

Quote:
That being said, Dr. Casey, I'll admit i was a bit hasty in my replies. However, when you insulted Mahler without even knowing what kind of person he is, it just ticked me off.
It's alright. I slightly regret making the "melodrama" remark, as I usually don't take the piss out of people who are showing sincerity, so... y'know, sorry and stuff.

Quote:
You're new here, you don't have a rep.
Not yet. You'll all be building statues in honor of me someday.

Quote:
But, from now on, don't take everything personally and please watch the language.
I don't think I should have too many problems from now on, really.

Quote:
Personally, I like Home Grown as a starting point. It provided me with a solid foundation to move on to other progams. From reading you goals and stats I think it would serve you well. It can also be done with a limited range of equipment.
Hmm...

Quote:
Everywhere I've seen your input, it has always been of a high degree of discipline. I would like to develop that in myself someday.
Yeah... ever heard that story about Robert E. Lee after the Civil War? These two guys were offering to give him $10,000 to use his name to sell a product. He replied, "Gentlemen, my name is all I have left, and that's not for sale." Really, a lot of people don't realize how valueable a possession integrity is. It's worth a tremendous amount.

Quote:
Casey, I would recommend the Homegrown Muscle (HGM) program from Mens' Health. I'm sure it's on one of the stickies. It's a year-long program that introduces you to many of the lifts and techniques that you will hear about on the board. For me, it was a great learning experience. There's lots of guys on the board that have done it and will give you advice as you progress.
Ah, alright. (... Sorry, this super-long post is killing my brain.)

Quote:
Best of luck to you, Casey. It's always great to see an 18 y.o. focussed on fitness.
Thank you very much.

Quote:
Dr. Casey you said you weren't willing to dump your routine because you've had it for so long.
I said that at first, but I'm also pretty damn hotheaded. I gave a better explanation on Page 2.

Quote:
Good luck with your fitness goals and have a Merry Christmas!
Thanks, my Christmas was rather nice. No Obssessive Disorder draggin' me down like last year.

Quote:
Great you love fruits and veggies, but cereal is bad except things like shredded wheat, bran, etc.
Wow, that's pretty damn boring. Cocoa Pebbles is where it's at.

Quote:
Chocolate milk should only be taken just before and just after workout.
I don't even drink chocolate milk on a daily basis anyway, but I wouldn't think it's that big of a deal. I don't plan to be like one of those guys on the cover of a fitness magazine wearing a towel around their neck and a fake, cheesy grin. I can stay fit without being absolutely obssessed.

peanuts
Ugh, it's nasty as hell to be brushing your teeth and bring out little peanut pieces.

*Insert rest of lax's post*
Alrighty, then.

In other news, I've rediscovered two old loves: chicken noodle soup and oatmeal. Mmmm.

Boy, this topic went into the toilet fast. Nobody plays nice together anymore.

Q: I know who, too.

Dr. Casey:

People are right about picking a well-balanced, professionally-made routine. Your routine is out of balance in a few ways. Yes, you'll see some gains, but there's stuff you are neglecting that will likely lead to some serious stalling out and imbalances later. Then, you'll be trying to dig yourself out of a hole much deeper than the one you're in (to use a phrase). Regarding how long you've been doing your routine: an EXTREMELY smart trainer said: "Anything works. Nothing works for more than about 6-8 weeks." (paraphrased). The idea is that to develop, you HAVE to change things up every month or so. Not big changes, or dumping everything, but changes. Now, some more detailed help:

I'll make it real easy for you and give you some specific leads/options of routines you could do and/or some info you should read (IMO):

You couldn't go wrong with the Home Grown Muscle routine. You'll have one year's worth of routine (even two, of you do the next level of it) that a put together logically by a knowledgeable professional. http://www.menshealth.com/cda/articl...10cfe793cd____

Other options and info by really solid pros:

And a GREAT article about designing programs:

Good luck!
