Hey, folks.

This isn't completely just to get that area more activity.

Q started a topic "Why study the martial arts?" For largely selfish reasons as a school owner and instructor, I would like your answers to that question. Actually, you can answer any of a few questions

Why do you study the martial arts currently? (if you do)
Or
Why did you used to study the martial arts? (Why did you stop, and what might get you back into it?)
Or
Why might you study the martial arts? (If it's any sort of possibility at some point in the future.)
Or
Why are you not intersted in studying the martial arts?

This should generate some good discussion, and provide me with some helpful insights.

Thank you all. See you over there.

I used to study TKD (ITF), and stopped because I felt that I was forced by my mother to start it and get to black belt. I got to first degree, but then stopped because so many years of going because of mom, made want to stop. I tried an assossiation of some sort but did not like it. I don't think I will get into TKD for a while.

I do not study martial arts. If I did, I think it would be for the wrong reasons. Not for self-confidence or even self-defense. I would want to go out and seriously kick some asses of people that piss me off. Therefore, I do not study the martial arts.

I mean that in all seriousness. I have a hair trigger temper and I am leary of the outcome if I knew how to seriously hurt someone.

You, however, should never be scared.

2) I took karate for a year back in grammar school because the school offered a program. It was cool-i learned basic stuff and could do a split I stopped because the program stopped and there weren't any martial arts places nearby that we knew of. Plus, i played soccer in the fall, skiied in the winter, and played baseball from march to july. So, martial arts wasn't really a high priority.

3)I think that martial arts are cool. The ability to defend myself would give me more self-confidence. Also, just being able to do martial arts moves would be sweet. So, that's why it might be a possibility in the future

4)I'm not interested in studying the martial arts at this moment because I just don't have the time or energy for it. If I were to join a martial arts club or dojo, or whatever you would like to call it, i'd want to be able to put 100% into it. With school, homework, baseball training, scouts, etc., there's no time that i would be able to participate in martial arts at 100%

Hope that helps

first...mahler it seems that it is always the really nice and wise guys that have short tempers. i am in the same boat.

now to the original poster:
i don't study martial arts yet. i have been in fights all my life. bad neighborhoods, but no formal training. just learning not get my ass kicked has taught a thing or two. i would like learn Wing Chun Kung Fu.

i would just study just to learn something knew. get some formal training and discpline for a survivor like me would be nice. i always wanted to.

i love martial arts. i just have a hard time finding the time for it. money won't be a problem, but time always is.

I don't study martial arts. I've never seen any martial arts women prancing around in bikinis. Which sadly might actually truly be one of the reason why I don't participate in the martial arts.

My basic understanding of martial arts is that it's useful for the following reasons:
1 - to defend yourself
2 - to beat other people up (even though it's basically taught as just self defense)
3 - improved self esteem from 1 & 2.

Not particularly interested in any of those reasons at this time. So that combined with the fact that it does cost money, significantly more than a gym membership, is why I've no interest in it. (My gym membership is under $200 for a year, in NYC, although it only includes some cardio equipment and all the necessary heavy irons for weight lifting) If I recall correctly martial arts costs $600 dollars for a half year course and that meets once or twice a week?

Kaply: Cost can vary; my tuition less than what you stated.

Anything is worth any cost if you feel it is. I'd venture to say that most people actually don't study martial arts for self defense. Sure, they have that as an interest on some level, or at least realize that it is a by-product of training.

However, I think most people are attracted to the personal discipline aspect of practice, and to the total and connected use of mind/body/spirit that occurs. Some people, too, practice for sport, but most practice just to practice and improve themselves mentally and physically.
