Default Maximum fat loss

For the average person,

What do you all think would be the maximum amount of fat a person could loose while maintaining muscle?

Ive heard figures from 2lbs a week, to 1% of bodyweight per week.. The 1% seems to make more sense, but is this the number? What about on the first week or so, could you expect more fat loss?

I began thinking about this after the fat loss article I read today on tmag. I mean, that routine is no doubt in my mind going to shed off fat, but when is it to much? When would you have to compensate with less work or adding more calories if you are loosing to fast?

It depends. For example, if you are a large person, carrying hundreds of pounds of fat, you can lose more than someone who's already at 10% bf.

Here's a good article on the subject:
Determining the Maximum Dietary Deficit for Fat Loss

Ya, like Jeff said it's one of those things where there is no clear cut answer. The more fat a person has the more they can lose without a negative effect on muscle. And it's going to also depend on their condition and plain old genetics. Some people are better able to maintain more muscle mass with a low bodyfat % than others.
