I literally just got back from my first spin class, ever.
VERY cool setup - I go to Crunch in downtown NYC - a pretty big gym with a decent layout. I had never been downstairs until this morning - the entire downstairs (2 large classrooms and a stretch area) is dimly lit with oddly painted walls and techno music playing pretty loud - kind of like a club or something. The spin class is at the end of the hallway, an even darker room with blacklights and - apparently - no real ventilation (it must have been 85 degrees in there). Biggest mistake: I didn't bring a water bottle.
The instructor was a real nice guy, came over and set up my bike for me and gave me some basic instructions. It was going to be a 45 minute ride. I have been to Hell now, and it is raising your butt about 2 inches off of your seat and peddling like a maniac. Needless to say, by the end of the 45 minutes I was soaking wet and PRAYING to take my feet out of the stupid caged peddles. I was dreaming about what it would feel like to walk on a normal surface after about 20 minutes of this class.
So, if you are looking for a workout that tests your mental and physical discipline, I would highly recommend a spinning class. There is little to no room for slacking off.
Just BRING A WATER BOTTLE.
