I can't even quantify how much sleep I've lost over this thread - because you CAN'T DIVIDE BY ZERO.

ok, that's fine.
I wasn't mad, it's just that there's been a few people who absolutely hate to be pushed off their thrones.
It just seemed like it came out of left field.

Personally, what I've learned through 47 years of life, 20 years of marriage, 18 years of raising kids, 6 years of higher educaton, 30 years of work and 10 years of instructing, oh, several hundred students is . . . oh, never mind. It sounds like a few youngsters here already know it all.
Jeez, I wasn't perfect until . . . well, I'll let you know when it happens.
Must be nice.
Eric: You are very knowledgeable, dedicated and have already achieved much, and at a fairly young age. That much is, truly, impressive. However, there is much more. Maybe you should be losing a bit of sleep.
Kevin: You don't get to use the word childish until you're at least half my age. I'm going to tell your mommy you need a spanking.

I'd like to think that I know that arguing on the internet is like competing in the Special Olympics; even if you win, you're still retarded.

Well, hell, they might win the Special Olympics, but they're retarded, so it's not really impressive.

Nah, it is impressive, even inspirational sometimes. I've known quite a few people who were involved with these events in various capacities.
Deserve pointed out a few days ago that this thread could make for a valuable lesson, and he's a guy whose opinion I would highly value in such matters. Eric is obviously a top notch trainer and a major up and comer in the business. He may not have been aware of just how big his audience really is and how much influence he may already have. He obviously evoked a strong negative reaction with some of what he has said, but the upside is that he'll likely become more cognisant of how wide his reach is and what sort of audience(s) he's playing to. The sky's the limit when you can harness a large audience in your chosen field.

I've taught a couple of our state medalists. That comment was intended to be "clever" since this post started as a discussion of Eric's use of the term impressive.
BTW, aren't Canadians too nice to laugh at such a comment? I'm going to tell the Minister of Manners, or whoever deals with such matters north of the border.

Sometimes even the basest of humour gets a positive reaction from me, even if I know it's wrong......
And reagrding the subsequent debate about what constitutes a real powerlifter, bodybuilder, etc.-------I see myself as a 'recreational' hockey player, lifter, etc. I can call myself a hockey player if I want and my friends won't object, but believe me, no one will confuse me with a REAL hockey player. :p

This thread ranks right up there with FenderBenders "I wanna look like brad pitt" threads in terms ghey.
I think people have to stop getting butthurt about DLing 315. If you think that EC was thinking directly about you (the poster, i.e. Chris cuz he picked on me) when he made that line, Im sorry but youre not that special. You can make a lot of generalized statements and if you dont fit the generalization, then move on.
If that one comment struck your core and made you think youre not strong, then work at getting stronger. If you want to feel special about DLing 315, then post it in a PR thread, but dont think that the rest of the world is going to rub you off just because of it. Keep lifting to improve yourself and keep learning.
Btw, this forum needs a sarcasm button fo' sho'. Lots of fragility in the egos here.

Well, as least I'm obviously piss poor at expressing myself in writing.
How did you ever read that I felt so special about myself such that I thought Eric was talking about me or people like me? Hell, I'm not even special enough to deadlift 315! I'm well below, in status, the group Eric was talking about. I'm less than special.
First, GQ, the "picking on you line" was intended to be as much good natured as much as it was intended to express my difference of opinion/perspecive with you as to the nature of Eric's original statement in his article, and his subsequent explanation. Sorry if I inadvertently insulted you. I didn't intend to.
Second, I don't think I ever commented on the 315/impressive matter in a manner that implied (or, at least, I never intended to imply) that I personally felt challenged or belittled. I don't give a s**t about deadlifting 315, 515 or 915 pounds. Truly, for people who can, I greatly admire their effort and ability. I know what achievement takes. If/when I lift that much, then great. It will be, as you noted, a PR. Until then, I do what I do. Thanks for the preaching, though.
I don't think I'm the one making judgements and catogorical statements. I didn't start the topic. I joined into the discussion and expessed my opinion about a statement Eric made in his article and did so, I think, fairly respectfully. Some of the subsequent conversation was fueled in good measure by Eric's "you people need a life if all you want to do is pick on something I said" attitude. As least that's the way it came across to me. You seemed to agree with him in that vein. I took -- still take -- issue with that attitude.
A writer writes something, people take issue with it. Perhaps it was misunderstood. In a decent conversation, I would think, the writer listens to the critics/questioners, tries to undestand their concerns, and tries to better explain himself. It's actually a conversation, not a debate. Sometimes a writer might even say, "I possibly could have gotten my point across better." However, people don't like getting told they didn't understand it correctly, and then get borderline ridiculed or blown off.
How in hell did I become a bad guy in all this?

Don't be delusional about human nature. Eric makes a large proportion, if not the majority of his $$$ through people on the net. If you really think that he didn't slip up a little and could have been more tactful/tactical (and can learn from this experience), then skip along your merry way. Beneath it all, I personally am trying to help the kid.

I just like to say that I deadlift 500, and consider myself a pussy.
Eric, Can I join your club now?
Would the article have been better if the weight he referenced was different?
