i've been weight training for a few years now, keeping it very simple - nothing particularly heavy.. I've had a York bench up until now but want to get something a bit more substantial. After reading the thread about near misses with weights and having had a few scares myself I was looking for a bench which incorporates a safety sytem... something like this one..
MARCY TSA5762 Half Smith Olympic System
I can't get to a gym so work out at home on my own so safety for me is important esp as I'm an old man now! (hit the big 30 last year ) :p
Don't want to spend a fortune but would like to get a decent bit of kit to allow me to carry on but also push the weights up a little higher. I'm not looking to gain muscle just keep the stuff I already have..100kgs is sufficient for me..
So does anyone have any other suggestions as to what bench to get, is the one above a good bench...? all suggestions gratefully accepted..
you can get a power rack, which has safety bars. So if you fail, the bar will just stay on the safety rails and you can wiggle out.

We just went with a power cage. Safe, adjustable, can do nearly anything in it. Not all that expensive, a bit more than some of the things you're prolly looking at. Can find a few for a couple hundred USD, donno how easy it may be to find outside the US.
Personally I'm anti-smith anything, I usually end up heading for injury on anything that limits my movement like that.
Also, look for a used equipment store. Equipment like power racks really never break (no pulleys or weight stacks to wear out), so finding one used for a lot cheaper is a good way to get a nice rack on the cheap.

We got ours via craigslist (.org)... which since I have no idea where you are I have no idea if it would be helpful to you... but it's basically a great way to find "garage sale" items people want to get rid of. Ours was with a ton of weight (actually only a half ton) and a super great deal.
I like to look for new equp't at http://newyorkbarbells.com/. Great prices, but the shipping costs will kill any savings. But if you find what you want for a good price online, print it out and take it to your local home fitness retailer & see if they can offer a similar product and/or deal. Who knows, they may even have something better...

exact same products as midwest, except you deal w/ susan through midwest. I've heard crappy stuff about nybb's customer service, but to each their own
FWIW, about a month or so ago, I was in the market for a squat/power rack and sent questions to both NYBB and MWBB, I only ever heard back from NYBB. Nothing from Midwest.

Some of the NYBB racks have free shipping. Not sure how they decide which ones, and it changes periodically. This one and this one are listed right now with free freight.
I've ordered from them twice, with no problems, and you get to watch the poor FedEx guy try to drag a 150-lb. parcel to your door (I helped him on the second one).
