Default I almost died today...seriously

I was in the gym today working out, and had just finished my warm-ups for decline bench. I haven't done declines in a little while, and I noticed that my palm was really hurting from the placement of the bar. During my second set on my second rep, my hand suddenly gave out (I'm assuming it was a trigger-point reaction or something along those lines) and the bar dropped suddenly and came crashing down directly onto my chest...I heard a crackle, but no snap and pop as the bar bounced off of my chest and i "caught it." I was able to re-rack the bar, and I got up almost shaking. After a few minutes I could breathe fully again, and self-palpation didn't reveal anything, nor did weight-bearing. Right now, I've just got a low-level uncomfortable feeling and some slight pain with specific pressure where the bar hit me.

I was unbelievably lucky today: the bar could have easily come crashing down onto my neck (luckily, I take a lower position with the bar) or rolled onto it, or had the bar been heavier (I was going for reps today, although it was still over 200 pounds...200 pounds crashing down onto your chest is NOT fun!) I could have easily broken ribs or crushed my sternum.

Take home message: please be careful everyone...It was a freak event, and nothing like that has ever happened to me before, but it happened. Make sure that you don't ignore pains or signals that something isn't quite right. Always make sure that you lift carefully and that you are "safe." I was very fortunate that the biggest thing to get hurt was my pride today...it's safe to say that it could have been a LOT worse.

Be safe

A good reminder, Jonathan. Glad you weren't seriously hurt.

Man I remember when something like that happened to a friend of mine. We were over my friends house having a couple drinks and playing video games and one of our friend's gf's called him and he went into the other room to talk to her. He ended up laying on the bench and then tried to lift the bar (which had like 200 lbs on it). Anyway he got it up but a second later we (still in the other room) hear this huge crash. And ran in to save the kid who basically couldn't hold the bar up let it crash down onto him. We ended up pulling it off of him and he was alright, but still scary...

Glad you're ok though Jonathan.

Man that is scary stuff. This is why I never do BB bench without a spotter. There is to many other exercises to do by yourself. Good to hear you are okay, and thanks for the reminder.

Man, I told that barbell to crush, not bounce!

Glad you're O.K., Jon. Heal quickly!

Jon,
I had the same thing happen in the college weight room in 1996. I DID have a audible snap and pop. Its called a complete pectoral rupture by Dr. John Wolffe of Yale New Haven Hospital.

Ever figure out what happened with the hand?

I'm most impressed with, "the bar bounced off of my chest and i "caught it."

Reminds me of my almost near fatal accident at South Side Gym last year. Worked up to heavy singles doing cambered bar, chain suspended GM's. On my last set with 475lbs, the right chain "broke" and came crashing down pinching my right hand. It was kinda loud.

I hadn't noticed that the chains weren't latched to the power rack at the top. How I even did 6 sets before that without the chain coming undone is beyond me.

Glad you're alright John

Live to lift another day, man. Maybe you'll learn not to, um, pre-fatigue that hand before hitting the iron
