Default Eating Before Working Out?

I workout EARLY AM...5-6AM, and I was wondering if it was better to do the workouts on an empty stomach followed by a protein shake right after the workout. Or is it better to have the protein shake, workout and then have a breakfast?

THANKS!

I also workout first thing in the morning. I drink a recovery drink during and post workout, then have my first whole meal about one hour afterwards.

My goal is fat loss, and this is what is recommended in Berardi's Metabolism Advantage for morning workouts.

Any other food suggestions...also looking for fat loss from a summer of endurance training.

Default Eat AND Drink first thing

It is a good idea to eat before you workout particularly if it is early in the morning. For most the body has gone 6 - 8 hours without food at the minimum while you sleep. So when you first wake up your body will need food and water. If you do not have much a small snack like an apple and cheese and 2 cups of water will do fine. The idea is to have water, a few carbs, a little fat, and some protein to get things going. You will want 30 minutes of digestion time before you workout.

If you are looking to increase muscle mass consume more water, protein, and carbs as soon as you are done working out. Then within the next 2 hours have a balanced meal.
Hope this helps.
