"I'm not concerned about gaining muscle..." (overheard at the gym)
I thought you guys might get a kick out of this. I was in the locker room today and overheard a couple guys talking. One was complaining that he had gained some weight. The other said, "Well, it could be because you've put on some muscle." The first one said, "I'm not concerned about gaining muscle. I just want to get toned."

People fail to realize you can't tone fat.
And I gaurantee you the reason he's 'not concerned about gaining muscle' is because he's failed miserably at it.

This is probably the same guy who will spend long hours doing cardio.
To most people, getting toned means losing weight irregardless of whether it comes from muscle loss or fat loss. As long as the scale goes down, toning is achieved. It's amazing that many personal trainers have been bashed and badmouthed by ladies who say their weight has not gone down after engaging their services even though the mirror indicates good progress.
Interestingly, this may be a backlash of the obesity crisis here in America. People have become convinced that weight loss is fat loss because fat dudes lose mainly fats when they follow an exercise and diet plan to lose weight. If the body comp improvements is dramatic, uneducated minds also take it to mean that fats become muscles rather than the simultaneous effect of bodyfat being lost and muscles being built.

If you say you're not concerned about gaining muscle, doesn't that mean that you're okay with that part of the gain? Maybe I'm misunderstanding.

My interpretation was that he was basically saying "I don't want to gain muscle, I want to get toned." The question for me is -- what does he think "toned" means? This is probably why the word has such a bad rep.

I was finally able to convince my gf that mirror progress counts a lot more than the scale when you're weight training in addition to a healthy diet. She's a lot happier now.

The irony is that it's a lot easier to get "toned" if you get a lot more "muscle".

Yeah, but putting on muscle takes hard work and an acceptance that you'll probably have to gain a little fat as well, 2 things a lot of people aren't willing to do, so they prefer to spin their wheels trying to tone what they don't have and remain skinny-fat for the rest of their life.
