Mahler’s Monday Morning Motivator # 154 – Tomorrows

Tomorrows

I can recall when as a child it seemed like the things we wanted the most took so long to get. The events that we looked forward to seemed to be so far in the distance and it was as though they would never arrive. That new bike seemed so elusive until we were actually riding it down the street. The last day of school had all the appearances of receding into eternity until the final bell rang and summer began. A simple ride in the car was boiled down to the quintessential “are we there yet?”

Kids haven’t change much in that respect, with one exception. In our ever changing, faster paced world of on the spot gratification, the instantaneous resolution of their needs and wants seems to be many a parent’s prime directive.

In the past, a picnic, a trip to the pool or the amusement park that was spoiled by bad weather, was solved with a simple, yet sympathetic “we’ll do it tomorrow.”

Tomorrow, even back then, seemed like a carrot hanging from a stick. It was something to placate us, but would it ever really come? Of course it would, but when those fatal words were spoken, it was not something we chose to comprehend.

In the present, those simple words “we’ll do it tomorrow” had better be followed by “but here is what we’ll do today, instead.” Sadly, all too often, waiting, expectation and anticipation are pushed aside as something to be shunned like a suspicious looking stranger. Today must be made palatable until we can provide the delights of tomorrow.

As we pile up a few yesterdays, hopefully we learn that all of our todays are not always palatable. In fact, some of them are pretty disappointing and others downright disastrous. It is at times like these that we need to retreat into the comfort of tomorrows. I read an interesting quote once and wish I could remember the source. It may actually have been Lucy Maude Montgomery of Ann of Green Gables fame. “Each tomorrow is brand new with no mistakes in it.” That has always stayed with me, and when I have one of those less than perfect days I try to remember that tomorrow can, and often will, be better. Of course, there are no guarantees, but you know what? If it isn’t better, there is another tomorrow right after that, and another and another.

We all have bad days. We all make mistakes. We all have experiences that are less than perfect. The imperfections and disappointments of today are what tomorrows are made for.

Excellent John. I try to explain this to my 6 year old but he doesn't yet quite grasp the idea. I wish that by reading this to him he would 'get' it. Well there is always tomorrow

i just had one of the worst sundays in a long time once i realized what i did after i was put to bed from the party saturday night - i ended up getting back out of bed and tearing my take home midterm up into pieces and throwing it away while still drunk and crying.

tomorrow is truly a new day...
