Now I Get It!
From Eric Cressey's current article at T Nation:
Quote:
7. Ben is doing plenty of bench presses, but no push-ups. Don't get me wrong, as I love the bench press. It's just that you need to complement open-chain upper body work (e.g. benches) with closed-chain upper body work (e.g. push-ups).
In the former scenario, the scapulae are fixed, and in the latter, the scapulae are free to move. Even just working some push-up variations in during the warm-up period or on off-days can dramatically improve shoulder health.
I never understood why push-ups were any different than bench press, now I know.

Maybe I'm weird, but I've always hated bench presses but loved push-ups. Different strokes, I suppose, but good post nonetheless

Great to hear. I have been doing push-ups on a regular basis and was wondering if they were doing me any good. I usually do a set of 40 before going to bed.

I love suspended chain pushups. They are really fun to do.
Im built to bench press, short arms and im thick, but I cant say I enjoy it that much compares to squats/deads etc.

Doesn't matter how much he's got on his back, since Mahler is pushing the Earth down...

:p Roland, folks who come to the summit are going to be very disappointed when they meet me and say to themselves, "This old fart is Mahler?"

Despite the reverant jokes, it's your kindness and supportive nature that everyone loves. Not your old creaky bones and strange smells.

When I first started training, I was told a story about a man/beast named Mahler who once beat God in a hand of poker....on a bluff.

He told me later that he let me win.

That's true.....and then Mahler told him politely 'Psst.... you're in
my seat.'
