I'll BE GLAD WHEN SPRING BREAK STARTS!!!
... and the " CURL-FEST" will be over for a while! JEEZ, I work out in a college student center gym and it's getting pretty intense. The guys are all curling like crazy! They must be watching those "BIG GUNS in two weeks, guaranteed" commercials. Only one guy on the squat rack (pretty impressive for a smaller guy, too!) and all the mirrors in the placed jam packed with guys curling!!!

Yeah, I feel bad for folks who haven't discovered squats and deadlifts yet. Can you really call it working out without some variation of these two exercises?

I was doing single-leg DB RDLs today when some major grunting started up in the rack. I had to finish my set before I could even look over there, imagining I was going to see some big guy deadlifting or maybe doing Pendlay rows. Nope. It was a kinda big guy, lol, but he was curling, well, sorta. He was using his whole body to make the bar rock back and forth from a bump off the thighs to about belt height - some sort of power curl maybe???

Sounds like he needs to take some advice from ol' Dad there.

He's 21 and knows everything about some things, girls and lifting included. This a fight I really don't care about. He's lifted correctly through four years of high school and two years of D1 college sports. Some of the college workouts he's told me about would kill you or me. I think at this point he just wants to look good without killing himself again.

Didn't you know that's a good glute-ham raise alternative?
Q, I'm sorry to say that it doesn't get much better in the commercial, post-college gym, either. I usually hate lifting on Monday afternoons because that's ostensibly chest/bicep/quarter-squat day (oh wait, that's every day), but I've started getting there a little earlier than the usual crowd so I can hog the power rack with either my 6x5 Bear session or a Meltdown (the original) session. While my gym actually had the good idea a couple months ago of moving the power rack up by the mirrors and pushing all the chest stations back, I still find myself surrounded by glute-ham curls, tricep quarter-extensions, and lots of self-admiration. It's also kinda nice to already be setup and rolling by the time the groups of guys (think girls going to the bathroom, but with guys) show up, see the power rack being used, and instead commandeer a bench press station for the requisite strutting and ass slapping (usually at the same time). Of course, that's all they can do because it'd just be too hard to pick up a barbell from the floor and start curling. Might strain their back, though I thought that weight belt they prominently wear was supposed to avert that kind of injury.................. pricks.............

No no no! Don't you know that the quarter squat has to be cycled? You'd never want to do that every time you come into the gym. Once at week at the most! :p
My daughter sent me this picture. I think this is the look they are going for!
