Hopefully a little foul language doesn't offend you, but I think a lot of people should take this message to heart. I worked my butt off to save up and build my gym, but it's been CRUCIAL for getting me back on track to achieve my goals.
I think the people on this site are serious about their training, and I understand that it's hard to stay focused when everyone around you is following the Flex workout of the month, or just doing a little "hanging and banging." You don't even need to do what I did, but building your own little sanctuary is a good thing - I've actually found my lifting to be much more focused, almost therapeutic, since taking my gig underground.
Damn Mahler! That is a really NICE home gym! I can't wait....gotta marry my girl first then the second thing...home gym!
I am surprised area fitness centers don't see your place as a threat to their business! You can charge for use!
Thanks, John.
I have added a few things since this pic was taken. There is now a Roman Chair and a heavily padded lifting platform area for my deads, but you get the idea.
I started out with that "universal" in the foreground about 5 years ago and outgrew it in less than six months. Now I use it only for cable work. The nearest gym at the time, was about 40 minutes away and in the wrong direction from work. Now they have one within walking distance and I don't need them. The solitude of an early morning workout, somehow appeals to me. I am there for me and not worried about what others think or are doing.

It's funny... I was listening to Justin Timberlake when I read the article... (I know, I know...)
I have lost every shred of respect I ever had for you, Steve.
Mahler -- I don't think we've ever seen pics of your dungeon before! Very nice! And everything is neat and tidy, all the DBs are in perfect order. I wouldn't expect anything else out of you, though.

Nice rack. I like the numerous plate posts. It makes it more organized.
When I put my home gym together, I worked on a budget 1/2 that, but still managed a good setup, making the powerblocks the single most expensive peice.
I have lifted almost exclusively at home, save a ~10 total workouts in the high school gym. HS football players in the gym bother me. Besides, I got uprights for squats, a sturdy bench, DB handles, 200# in standard weights for the DBs, and 440# of olympic weights. Plus, bands, agility ladders, med balls, etc. Gyms? We dont need no steeeeeeeenkin gyms.

I have dreams of owning a homegym, I've gone to elitefts and loaded up my cart with all the items that would be in my perfect gym.. it's fun until I realize it'll be another 6-8 years before I can afford to divert the money to that.
