weight is weight. it doesn't matter what way it faces. It's not like if you move it writing side in that it will feel 10lbs lighter.

The indented side always goes in, unless you are talking about in a competition. When you grab a plate, your thumb goes on the smooth side and your fingers goin the indentation. If you put the plate on backwards, it's extremely difficult to get it off the bar.
The same goes for putting a plate on a tree.
I've been warning people that I'll make a video showing them why you plates on the way you do.

That's funny, because I've never had a problem getting plates off the bar. I must be some kind of superhuman. Ya, superhuman.

"Yeah. Ivanko goes out. Oh no, today's Monday. Never deadlift on Monday. Yeah. No deadlifting on Monday."
"Ray!"

That ends the debate - sure has been fun to watch, though.

When I first started lifting years ago I was told only noobs did the letters out. Since then I've always done the letters in to the point where I think it's a superstition now.

I always put the lighter ones on first, heavier ones to the outside. The bar bends more, looks impressive.

This thread makes me think of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. "Laces out, Dan!"
I hope I'm not the only one that gets this joke.
I'm sure people miss lifts ALL the time because of the orientation of the plates.

No, they miss lifts because they are CONCERNED about the orientation of the plates.

It takes the plates from the basket and puts them on the bar.

This is how I do it...
1st set:
Left side of Barbell: plate #1 facing inwards, plate #2 facing outwards, plate #3 facing inwards
Right side of Barbell: plate #1 facing outwards, plate #2 facing inwards, plate #3 facing outwards
2nd set:
Left side of Barbell: plate #1 facing outwards, plate #2 facing inwards, plate #3 facing outwards
Right side of Barbell: plate #1 facing inwards, plate #2 facing outwards, plate #3 facing inwards
3rd set:
Left side of Barbell: plate #1 facing inwards, plate #2 facing inwards, plate #3 facing inwards
Right side of Barbell: plate #1 facing outwards, plate #2 facing outwards, plate #3 facing outwards
Unless of course it is after noon, then it is the exact opposite. And I've found that duplicating this on highered number sets is just over kill. Just stick to the outline.

I've always done letters in for 3 reasons:
1- Only noobs put the letters out,at least that's what I was taught.
2- Easier to take off the bar.
3- This is my strongest argument, and why I've always believed it was best to put letters in--the plates seems to fit together better on the bar when they all face in. The center portion of the first plate matches up with the inner collar. From there, the rest of the plates form a tight fit. If you put all the plates on with letters out, the plates don't fit together tightly because of the center portion (the raised "hubcap" as I refer to it).
Anyway......
So how does everyone put them back on the tree? Letters out for me, because then you can grab the lip or flange if that's the style of plate you are using.
