This is what happens when society places value on Sports Stars and dumb blondes with the IQ of an amoeba (Spears, Hilton etc etc etc)... Highschools spend billions of dollars annually on football yet ask a teacher if they have to pay for classroom supplies out of thier own pockets.

In every third world country Teachers are the most respected individuals in society, in Western "Civilized" society they are portrayed as dumb and without knowledge.

I hope someone has told "T. Diddy" he should probably have a decent plan B if he doesn't make it in football.

Totally agree man.

I'm a big believer in athletics being part of education but it's getting ridiculous.

This is high school. If any classroom teacher used the word "fuck" once, they would likely be out of a job. I lost track of the number of times those coaches used "fuck" and "motherfuck." They are there to inspire and set an example and yet behaved on or below the level of the kids they were coaching. No wonder the kids showed no respect. T-Diddy may be in for a rude awakening. Someday he will be a big fish, but in an ocean and not a pond. This was thoroughly disgusting and the reason why I am so down on athletics these days. How does the classroom teacher control these kids, when they are primed for such agressive behavior and disrespect.

When did sports become the curriculum and learning, self-discipline and respect become extra-curricular?

The sad truth, however, is that this kid will likely get a free ride through some university, while a budding scholar, surgeon, scientist, you name it, will have their family go into hock and burden themselves with school loans in order to get a degree. Pathetic. Truly, pathetic.

Taurean Charles (T-Diddy) signed with the Florida Gators in, I think, 2002. Here is a little interview about some trouble that he found in Gainesville.

http://florida.scout.com/2/362337.html

After that, I think he left UF and went to Bethune-Cookman, a 1-AA school.

Here is his draft profile:

I don't know this for a fact, but I'd guess he's a marginal pro prospect at best. Obviously, that is a difficult environment to come out of. It's easy to SAY that the kid should have better judgment, but let's face it...we can SEE where it was OK during his formative years for respected, admired men to use physical force out of anger and intimidation....FAR from self-defense.

Of course, Mahler is completely right about how screwed up our priorities are as a society...

Really that about sums it up. The irony is that in many schools when funds are short the first things to be cut are physical education programs. It's a shame but it seems that as time goes by the reasons physical education and sports programs are touted as being important in school in the first place (fitness, sportsmanship, learning good work ethic and team work) are falling by the wayside for more of a neanderthal and/or $ outlook on athletics.

I love sports. But really, any society where a professional athlete makes so much more than a teacher, cop, firefighter, or (insert truly useful occupation here) has something seriously wrong with it anyway.

Well I can tell you that a lot of people I talk to say the same thing, in the US everything is sports. They way you have everything revolve around sports seems to make it ok to do anything you want to have a winning team. The universities get their money from investors and if the school has a good football team then you get more money, etc. You guys get more people going to high school football then most Canadian pro football teams get out. No one goes to any non pro sporting event up here, and half the high schools are losing their sporting teams except hockey and the kids have to pay to play sports in school.

That video is an utter disgrace, maybe it's a culture thing but if any highschool coach did that here they'd be up in court.

We had a High school teacher who was an ex marine, he'd ball, scream and jump up and down but he'd never swear or lay a finger on those he was teaching/encouraging

As a teacher, I found that video sickening. I agree with a lot of what you all have said. This has become a huge issue in my school district. WHile budgets are being slashed for curriclar programs, the athletic budget continues to grow. There have even been cuts in the physical education program, but after-school athletics have been getting more money.
I also see star athletes receive preferrential treatment all the time. There is an "athletic code" which requires students to maintain a certain GPA; however, this is rarely ever enforced. Some of these kids think they will make the big time, and miss their chance on an education. Another thing that adds to the problem is that Tony Romo of the Dallas Cowboys actually graduated from the high school in which I teach (prior to me teaching there). Now, every kid thinks that they can be the starting quarterback for the Cowboys.
