Stupid people in the gym - a rant!
Today was dead day. Warmed up and planned to pull 145lb for 6 sets of 4. Got 5 reps and it felt easy. Did it again and decided I was just gonna go up by 10lb pulling one rep each and just see how far I could go. Some days it just all comes together and it was a good day.
155 x 1, easy
165 x 1, wow, still easy
175 x 1, harder, but still feeling strong
Got 185 on the bar.
I’m in a groove, right? In the right mindset. I’ve chalked my hands again. I’m focused on the weight. Got Black Label Society’s Fire It Up on my iPod and listening to them scream:
"Keep moving up, keep moving up, keep movin up
Face your fear
Accept your war
It is what it is"
I step up to 185, take my big breath in, brace my core and …
This idiot steps up to my right, just inside the cage with his feet over the bar, and says, “I know you’re about to do that, but I’ve just got to say that you’re doing a great job with Pat. I think you’re a great trainer.”
What!?!
Stssssssssssssss……ALL the steam went right out of me. Good grief. What an IDIOT. If he knew I was “about to do that” then why in the hell did he have to speak to me right at that moment? That comment, while well intended, really could have waited until I finished, you know? I could barely hear the guy over my music anyway. F**K, F**K, F**K!!!!
Pulled anyway as he stepped back from my glare and missed it. Paced around pissed off for a while, pulled again and missed it. OK, that was the end. I had it in me before the interruption. I know I did. I’ve gotten 185 before, just not in quite a while. Man, stupid people in the gym.
OK, end of rant. Thanks for listening.

You should print this out and post it up in the gym. Hopefully the idiot knows how to read.
You'll get it good the next time.

Thats why as a trainer, you NEVER workout where you work.
Mistake on your part..cost you a good lift, although compliment was well-intentioned. Not everyone "understands" gym etiquette.

HAHAHAHAHAHA
Na. I'm gonna workout where I work. I like my gym, and no matter where you go there are stupid people. Besides, I gotta set the standard!

That's a good attitude, I like that.
You know what, Lisa? Next time you'll hit 195.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA He's a pretty little guy, so maybe I should have just snatched his ass overhead and thrown him across the room?
LD, You made me laugh at myself. It sounded like someone died! I guess my lift died, but that's pretty silly in the grand scheme of things. I just got so worked up to make the lift! HA!
Thanks to all of you guys for making me feel better. There are not a whole lot of people who'd even understand why it bugged me so much!
Matthew, 195, hum. I'll be thinking about that!

I feel for ya, awhile back I had some lady answer her cell phone right next to the rack while I was doing rack pulls. Some people are just dumb.

While we're on this topic....
I'm doing step-ups with a weighted barbell on my back. A guy just walks straight into the bar in the middle of my set.

OMG! Did you lose your balance or twist or anything? That was not just irritating, but dangerous!

I would've been pissed. That's a safety issue and it's common sense, that's not a gym etiquette issue.

My trainer was resting between lifts, seated on the bench and some guy came up and started removing a plate from his bar to use on the Ab machine next to him. The trainer flashed him a glare and then the guy asked "oh are you still using that". Some people are just clueless.

And that sucks Lisa. Just goes to show how people are completely clueless to the mental aspect of lifting. Like just yesterday when I walked into the gym there was a guy deadlifting (probably less weight than you BTW), and as I go around the corner I barely enter his field of view, pretty much 90 degrees to his left, about 10 feet away from the platform, and IN THE MIDDLE OF A REP, he turns his whole head all the way to look at me. How unfocused can somebody be that just walking by makes them lose all concentration.

Lisa,
When you get pissed, there really IS something wrong. When I saw your name as the author of this thread I thought WTF, Lisa? I bet the moron goes to golf tournaments and says words of encouragement as the person is putting.
