Mahler’s Monday Morning Motivator # 148 – Word Power
Word Power
I am reminded this week of the tremendous power that the human language can have. With the passing of my birthday and my milestone post, I have gone back to read over the many good wishes, simple pats on the back and sometimes extended commentaries. What an amazing boost it gave to me. In an age when many fear the accumulation of their years and bemoan the erosion of the time they have left, I am buoyed up by each and every word.
I can remember back to my school days when we had a booklet that was used for vocabulary development. It was called “Word Power.” What a simple concept. Each week we were introduced to five new words to read, to learn the meaning and to spell, to use in a sentence, and sometimes to store away and treasure for future use. What a drag it must have seemed back then, but what an amazing bounty when you can open that treasure chest later in life.
I read daily the many posts and comments in these forums and am almost invariably drawn to many a signature line to see what words have made an impact upon the person posting. The nature and variety is surely a mixture of the profound to the mundane, yet each has something to say, some message to convey. More than once, I was surprised to see something that I had written displayed there at the bottom of a post as part of the member’s signature. How gratifying it is that my words have made an impact, had some special meaning or made some difference to someone.
Yes, words can be very powerful and they don’t have to be the ten-dollar variety that I learned back in school. In fact some of the most powerful are often the most simple of all; Please - Thank You - Excuse me - I’m sorry – Hello. Yet, how often today these are neglected. We have slowly reached a point where to show courtesy with a simple word is tantamount to revealing our weakness and where peppering each sentence with generous explosions of the “f” bomb is seen, at least by some, as being strong.
Just remember, that words, the right words, can have great power; the power to cheer; the power to console; the power to encourage; the power to motivate; the power to inspire; the power to change. I am reminded today that Martin Luther King, Jr. was one who knew much about the power of words and used them to great effect.
We cannot think in terms of our bodies alone. For with or bodies we can only affect the physical, but with our minds, through words, we can lift spirits, move hearts and change lives.
My sincere thanks for all of the words, powerful words, that you have showered on me these past several days; words that have truly lifted, moved and changed me in ways that you will never know.

I am sure that the kind words from the folks here last week were just a sampling of the gratitude we all have for your words and thoughts that motivate and inspire us all year.
Thanks Again John.

You have shown, John, week in and week out, the power of the written word. Thank you for continuing to inspire and motivate us with your eloquent use of the English language.

Excellent motivator Mahler. It made me think of the affirmations that help me stay on track with my nutrition. Words DO make a difference, for the positive or the negative. It's amazing how much power they really do have. Words spoken to us create thoughts and thoughts become things.
Your words have lifted, moved, and changed me in many ways as well. I'm grateful for that.

I wondered if anyone ever read the signature lines anymore. I really like mine. It can be taken in any context that you want.
Thanks for another great motivator John.
Great motivator John. It's interesting how little most of us think about how words affect one another, especially the simple ones that we often neglect like

Please - Thank You - Excuse me - I’m sorry – Hello
I know that I can do a better job with these, thank you for the reminder.

When I first read this line, the first thing that came to my mind was poetry, but then I realized that one doesn't have to be a great poet, novelist, or essayist to effect change. As you've demonstrated it's much simpler than that.
Thanks again for a great motivator John. Unfortunately words are inadequate to express the gratitude that myself and many other forumites feel for your motivators week after week. Keep up the good work.
Whassup my bruthas!? It's really me! Back from zombie land!
Wil,
Your friendship and wit have been missed. Great to see you posting again. However, I do want to kick your ass for dropping off the planet for so long.
