Default Foam Rolling.

More effective before or after a workout?

I use it afterward, but it depends on how tight and sore you are. I think it is helpful to roll before a workout, especially tight areas that you will be working.

Before workout with your movemenpt prep work.

After workout, before any stretching.

Ditto Izzo. I do it before my mobility work, pre-workout. About eight total minutes of rolling/mobility really helps my form in the compound lifts.

This is good to know. I did it before I worked out - didn;'t quite feel a tight as normal. I will be doing it now before I workout, especially on my legs.

You could get some pvc pipe and wrap it in carpet.

Tennis balls, baseballs, softballs, golf balls all work great too. PVC pipe with carpet is a good idea. Maybe even use carpet padding or packing form or something if you need it a little softer to start.

Targets now carry them for around $20. Probably cheaper elsewhere but you can't beat the convenience.

as for the PVC pipe, I went looking for some today to make my own roller but I couldn't find 6" pipe. Is it 6" diameter pr 6" circumference on them? I assume it is 6" diameter and if so I have to keep looking.

No need to be that exact. Just find some around that range. 5-7 inches would work fine.

I have found that I like to use more intensive foam rolling pre-workout on really tight areas, so I use PVC or a Med ball on areas like my IT band before a squat workout and then I will use an actual foam roller after the workout on all of the muscles that I hit in the workout.

Not so much that I was trying to be exact as it was that I couldn't find anything above 3" dia. Well, I found one that was 4" dia. but it only came in 15ft sections of pipe. I just need to keep looking for something that will work better.

Yes, 6" diameter, but as Danny pointed out, you don't have to be exact. Usually PVC that large is used for a waste stack, so that might help the hardware store person find it for you.

Good idea using the med-ball, Danny. My gym doesn't have any foam rollers, so I can't really use one before my workout. They've got plenty of med balls, though. I think I'll try using one on my quads and IT bands the next time I do squats.

A med ball is an excellent choice for your upper back too!

Believe it or not, I just used a baseball bat about an hour ago before my workout. I couldn't find my foam roller, but my wood bats were in my closet, so I pulled one out and hell it worked. As a side, did anyone else see the Philidelphia Eagles trainer using a Massage Stick on one of the Eagle's player on Sunday? Thought it was cool to see the pros using that stuff.
