Default SMR

I used a foam riller tonight extensively and felt pretty sore afterwards for awhile...I still am sore. Is this normal for a SMR beginner??

My very limited personal experience is -- yes. It took me weeks to feel like the use of the thing wasn't painful and I wasn't sore later. You might back off a hair but it definitely will get better. Good luck.

duffeymt, If you're very tight and knotted up in an area, it can make you sore. Like drs said, just back off a bit on the pressure, but keep it up.

ah - just didn't recognize the acronym - thanks.

speaking of which - I'll just post the question here as it is essentially the same thing -
I've got a trigger point in my lower leg - just below the edge of the gastroc belly sweeping out to the medial aspect of the leg. I can go at it with a tenniis ball and get some relief - but after I am done is is VERY tender to the touch - tender like a fresh bruise -
I last worked it on 12/25 and it is still supersensitive to the lightest touch

Normal? Indication of something else? could I have damaged the tissue/really caused a bruising?

Is it a good idea to foam roll before or after lifting? Before or after an HIIT session?

I usually roll after I work out, both lifting and HIIT. I haven't found much benefit personally from doing it beforehand.

I think it's great to use a foam roller along static stretching and mobility work
Use the foam roller to work on tight muscles or inhibit them. Static stretching to increase ROM/lengthen tissue and follow with some mobility work to activate desired muscle group.

I just read an article by EC where he talks about foam rolling prior to workout with his clients. I can see how it will help loosen the muscles - i tend to get tight pretty quick after working out, so I foam roll afterwards to loosen.
