Suppose you were planning on working out a muscle but it is still pretty damn sore from last time around. What do you usually do? (and why if it isn't obvious)

1) Work around it and possibly do higher rep stuff for any exersises that target it.

2) Wait another day so you can follow your normal routine as planned.

Just curious is all

3. Do a thorough warm up and work through it.

I do total body workouts, three days a week. Soreness happens sometimes, but I don't let it throw off my routine. If I'm mentally fried, that's another story.

As Adam said, an effective warm-up followed by my current routine. No reason to let muscle soreness ruin my workout.

Adam, so do I(work full body). But when getting near the end of a cycle and aiming to set PR's in certain lifts a little bit of soreness can make you miss a lift.

Always made me wonder if it would be better just to stay at home and do it the next day when I would be better able to nail that weight.

You do Starr / Pendlay style, right?

If you are trying to hit a big PR, I'd say drop a workout the last week of the cycle or make sure your other training sessions are tailored to keep you fresh on the day you want to hit the PR. Make the Monday and Wednesday sessions a little easier and go balls to the wall Friday.

Does that help at all?

30 years ago.. I would have rubbed it with Antiphlogistine Rub A535 and worked through any kind of sore muscle..

now I'd use Antiphlogisine if I feel like pampering myself.. plus warm up real well.. but only do the workout if my muscles aren't TOOOOO sore.

but if they were (too sore).. I'd still make sure I move around to make them warm-up and un-wind a little...

I think it depends on what you're calling "soreness." Are we talking about that general slight achiness throughout the whole area that you know is from working out, or a more specific jab of pain when you make a certain motion, which is probably a muscle pull or something worse. The first one you can work through with a warmup.

If you're talking about the soreness from a previous workout? Then I warm up and work right through it. If it's a specific pain, I skip that bodypart and go on to others in the full body routine.

Depending on the severity of the soreness, I would either go through the workout, or go through the workout, but with lighter weights for the exercise that would utilize that muscle primarily, making it less stressful and a pseudo-active recovery.

I'd do the original workout as best I could. If that meant a drop in weight then that's cool.

I'd stretch it out and attempt to work the muscle as planned. If I need to adjust the amount of weight used, so be it.

I've found that if I save the sore muscle group for the last exercises, they aren't as sore by the time I get to them. Maybe it's getting thoroughly warmed up and the blood pumping through that helps so much.

Today, my shoulders were sore, but by the time I actually got to them, I'd forgotten.

RacerBill makes a good point. Hopefully, you know your body well enough to know if it's just some soreness that can be worked through, or if you it's a slight injury that may require more rest. If in doubt, take another day to rest it or do a general warm up to see if that reduces the soreness. Sometimes doing higher rep, lower weight exercises on off days can help recovery.
