Its been about 4 days now and no change. I was DLin on sun, had 455 on after a warmup and was about to start doing a six set 321,321 NROL Strength 3 scheme. Bar went up easy but down fast, too fast and it bounced a bit, my body kinda hit the "off" switch when the bar bounced up a good inch or two then boom pulled right back down, damned gravity. Right after, i was done. Left and for the first night I could barely stand erect(please no jokes im really hurting). Ive been popping advil, ice, heating pad, resting, trying to stretch it but nothing seems to work. Its right in my lower back and it like "stings" all the way down to my toes on my left leg. I think I mght of really hurt myself and I dont know what to do or where to go. I got terribly sick as well the next morning and I have been bed ridden since mon morning. Needless to say it hasnt been a good week for me. Im still pretty sick, and Ive had my gf basically taking care of me for like 3 days now. Any advice? I do nto trust Chiros and wont really be able to see a doc till I go home tomorow.
Your best bet is to visit a doctor when you return and in the meantime just don't aggravate it (no flexion, extension). There is nothing better than getting absolution from a professional who is able to see you and palpate.
If you were one of my clients, you would hear me say, "You obvisouly weren't ready for that weight!" Good luck!
The lbs in weight was actually lighter than what I had used previously for the rep scheme. Im still not really sure how it happend, all I know is that I have never felt like this after DLing, lighter, heavier, faster, slower.
Steve,
Definitely take it easy ... ice, NSAIDs, and nothing else right now until you are seen by a qualified medical professional ... avoid sitting if you can as it is notoriously stressful for the back ...

I'll probably get flamed for saying this and told I'm an idiot because this doesn't seem to be common knowledge. The fact you say you got sick the next day jumped out at me, because it's not uncommon for a cold virus to settle in a muscle, and it feels just like a pulled muscle. Exactly what you described has happend to me twice in my life. The pain is really bad for 5 or six days, ibuprofen, heating pads and massages don't help one bit, and then bam, I wake up the next morning and my back is perfect, like nothing ever happend. But, I always end up getting sick, or I have a sore shoulder or bicep all of the sudden. My father who's had pretty extensive medical training in his life explained to me that viruses settle in muscles all the time.
It doesn't seem to be very common knowledge, but cold viruses don't always settle in your chest or sinuses, they find a weak spot and settle there. Sometimes it's one of your muscles. Never the less, if you really think you've injured yourself, see a doctor as soon as you can get an appointment.

You're an idiot!!!
Hehehe, just kidding.
I've heard similar things, and in fact my massage guy has issues with people who are sick/getting sick and releasing their muscles. Can't remember the details.
But what you say sounds very interesting. I just don't know if Steve is willing to wait 5 or 6 days.
It is the "stinging" down his leg to his toes that has me concerned ... radicular pain is generally not muscular in origin ... and stinging is typical of neural involvement.
If your leg pain is constant regardless of position you may have a disc herniation. Severity of the disc lesion is based on severity of symptoms (i.e., if there's massive pain, it's a massive lesion)
If your back pain is worse than the leg pain, you may have primarily discogenic (from the disc) pain due to a protrusion. It can also be caused by an inflammatory reaction from an annular tear (The outer layer of the disc) which will cause swelling and irritation of the nerve into the leg if the outer layer of the disc is injured.
If your spine looks crooked with your hips shifted to one side, it's commonly a disc protrusion and nerve root irritation.
If leg pain is constant, try to get flat on your belly. If you can tolerate that, prop up on your elbows. Monitor your leg pain. If it moves upward toward your back, you're going to live. Follow this with 20 prone press-ups every waking hour. This keeps the disc protrusion under control.
If the leg pain is the worst part and quite severe, you may have a disc that sort of spilled its guts and is commonly referred to as a ruptured disc. Not a good thing. Get to the doc.
If the leg pain is intermittant without a change in position (you stay in one position and it comes and goes) and the back pain is focal I'd lean toward a ligamentous sprain or muscular strain with associated spasm.
A docs first line of defense is medication and pain control measures.
If it starts to resolve on its own over the next day or so, don't sweat it. Stay as active as you feel like being and ride it out with over the counter meds and cold or heat (after the first 72 hours). While we therapists like to think that our exercises make people better, there's no evidence to indicate that they're any better than self-selected activity (but don't tell anyone that I told you that or I might be out of a job ).
If you don't think it's getting better, go see the doc to get the ball rolling.
Wow Bill....THANK YOU. The pain down to my leg has almost disapated since the first day. I think I am making some progess because the pain has gone down noticably since the first day, just not enough for me to be comfortable. My parents made an appointment for a doc for when I come home, hopefully it will go away before that is needed. Going to take the dog for a nice long walk tomorow, will be the frist thing Ive done in days since this cold, which I think is making it worse since Ive been ben ridden. Thanks again Bill.
Holy crap Steve. I feel like a putz for whining about my recent back strain. At least I don't have a cold on top. So sorry dude. Of course you know to listen to Bill.
Just hoping you're healing. Sending good vibes your way.
