Default HIIT ... and stuff

So I'm currently bulking up to next weight class (-180lbs) and currently at 170lbs. But I'm gaining some fat around my abs and since I'm a always-been-skinny guy, the fat just irritates me. Now my question, Can I keep fat gain to a minimum doing HIIT without any negative effects on muscle gain? I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but I never really had to deal with this in the past so my knowledge is very limited on this subject.

another probably stupid idea: Since temperatures are dropping, would wearing a tshirt in the house instead of a sweater or something else warm would help keeping the fat gain low? Since your body has to use more energy to keep itself warm?

I would rely more "cardio-strength training" for your cardio.....things like combos, complexes etc. This type of training will get results without compromising lean body mass as much as traditional cardio will.

Cleaning up your nutrition will help maximize your performance and avoid additional fat gain.

And wear your sweater before you catch a cold.

I always thought that.. and in fact had been doing that for about 25 years.. when recently someone told me that being cold in the long run slows down your metabolism, since it has to survive the cold.

how about temperature hiit then?

for 30mins, have temp at 50degrees, no sweater
for 30 mins, put on sweater and turn up heat to 80

surely this would create the desired metabolic disturbance? Body wouldn't have time to slow down metabolism to survive, and we'd still benefit from the metabolism boost to keep body warm?

to crank it up, do jumping jacks or something to keep warm while freezing?

All HIIT is doing is burning calories.

If your getting fat, your probally eating to many calories. If your trying to add weight its extremely hard to stay very lean at all times.

Its all about finding the balance between maximum muscle gain and minimal fat gain. This can be done without cardio and just calorie manipulation.

I'll just lower my cals a bit and see how that goes, I don't expect to stay very lean. But I'm not used to a belly

I think a better strategy for minimizing fat gain would be to play with your nutrition. Keep the surplus small (I'd recomend 300-500cals a day) and take your time putting on the mass if you're that worried about fat gain and have the time to do it. Just weigh yourself every couple weeks under consistent conditions and see what your gaining and adjust your cals from there. And of course follow the 10 habits.

Great post Jason. This is what I meant by "cleaning up your nutrition." I did not mean to imply that you should cut calories.
