Question

What do you call what I did today? First, some useless background:

It was a pretty slow day at work this afternoon, and I was hanging stage lights while standing on a roughly twenty-foot A-frame ladder (the A1 model of the Little Giant ladder). As usual, in the middle of this, one of the event coordinators told me to stop since there was possibly a setup change. Okay, fine, whatever, they stand around talking for a few mintues, and I'm getting bored, so finally they leave, saying they'll be right back, and don't move. Well, in my boredom...

I did a couple pull-ups on the underside of the ladder, looked up, noticed there was no cross-support, so I started climbing the ladder, hand over hand with no foot contacts, up the underside until I got about halfway up (got a bit scared of my height from the ground then, especially with a failing grip), and reversed course. Basically, I was doing staggered concentric, almost plyometric pull-ups, using my momentum from the ground jump to get me started, necessary since I had to maintain position with one hand only while transferring to the next rung. My hands were never even--always one over the other. What did I just do other than discover yet another use for that ladder?

Hmmm, I'd call them "alternating off-set pullups", since you alternate which hand is high and which one is low each time you do a pullup. Similar to hands-only rope climbing, but while that involves a neutral grip, the ladder allows for either a pronated or supinated grip, and the off-set of the hand spacing is greater as well. Plus, changing the steepness of the ladder changes the degree of vertical off-set as well as the distance of vertical pull. Sounds like a great variation for pullup work to me. Nice "discovery", wonder why I never thought of that (duh!, slaps forehead with palm of hand ).

As regularly as work will allow, which won't be that regularly It just worked out that (a) it was a weekend, meaning (b) no big-wigs around, (c) no clients or guests were around, and (d) there were no valuable/breakable objects nearby. However, now that I've done that, I know I can do the pegboards that you see in wrestling rooms, so I might try to hit up the local high school for access to theirs.

bah.. I think it's good to have "some" exercises that we don't do regularly.. sort of to keep our body surprised.

Like most homeowners, we have a ladder to go up to the roof, maybe next summer I'll look into what I can try with it.

Thanks for sharing
