Don't modify the workout. It can be done with the coffee table, but then again it wouldn't be the picnic table workout any more now would it? How could you say if it was successful or not if you modify the workout?
I seen that in the newsletter and three things crossed my mind
1. You've got to be shitting me.
2. It'd probably work to an extent.
3. You've got to be shitting me.

Zach Even-Esh is known for his off-the-wall, out-of-the-box stuff, but he's a respected trainer who knows what he's talking about. I agree that this looks easy to make fun of and it doesn't sound like something I want to do, but I bet it would work.

The shipping on the picnic table's going to run a bundle.

The first exercise you should do is drag your table out from under that tree. And stop feeding the damn birds there!!

I do tend to agree with Lisa. It seems goofy at first glance. But it's just a type of strongman or GPP training, really. And if you use the types of picnic tables they have in public campgrounds and parks, those babys are pretty damn heavy. In addition to the type of tire flip motion seen in the pic, perhaps one can do a sled drag. Then there are pushups on and off the table, situps (perhaps even a roman chair kind) knee tucks, dips, maybe some version of a hotizontal pullup, box jumps, plyos jumps off of the top. Rather creative. Hell, why didn't I think of that? But it does seem kinda goofy at first glance. Hell

My first response was to wonder if it was some kind of spoof, though I've used picnic tables in my outdoor workouts the past few summers myself. You never know, what with some of the clowns we have on this forum .
Chris is right, public picnic tables tend to be pretty heavy, certainly enough to provide sufficient load for a variety of effective exercises. Pulling and pushing sled drags, standing incline presses (great core work, btw), front squat, presses, squat presses, one arm rows, various pushups, dips, bench dips, knee ups, L seats, roman chair situps, horizontal pullups, vertical pullups (stood almost on end, leaning against a tree), step ups, bulgarian split squats, various unilateral and bilateral plyos, etc. Taking along a weight vest or belt/chain/couple of plates will let you load the bodyweight exercises as well as add weight to the table for others.
So, I don't know anything about this specific workout, but I do know for sure you can get a great workout with a little imagination and a couple of picnic tables. And I love working out outdoors.

I'm sure you *could* but I feel like a dumb ass doing single leg deadlifts. My ego couldn't handle the pointing and laughing from a 45 minute table workout

G:
I've stood along mainstreet with a big line of kids while in my taekwondo uniform doing punching techniques.
I've practiced whacking on training partners in a public park while suited up in Kumdo armour.
I've carried a bamboo sword in my hand while jogging two miles down a main road to a public park to practice.
There's more I need not mention.
Doing exercises on a picnic table is nothing.

the key difference is you're displaying what *could* happen shortly after someone pointed and laughed. No one wants to get kicked in the head or have a guy beat them with a big stick. What kind of thing are you showing with the table? Instill the fear of you sneaking up while they're trying to enjoy a picnic and tipping over their table?

http://www.undergroundstrengthcoach.com/ is a link to his website. He does do some cool, if unorthdox stuff, mostly with high school athletes. What surprises me a little how much other fitness guys support each others programs with testimonials. It seems the same experts all line up to endorse each others' work, no matter what it is.

I've met Zach. He's the real deal... A really smart and creative trainer who hates being confined to a gym. He looks like a Gladiator. Hand him a battle axe and a shield and he's there. I sure as hell wouldn't want to be in the arena against him!
I've done a variation on this by creating a playground workout. I can train any athlete on a playground with a full body workout guaranteed to kick their ass! This is just along the same line. In fact, I think he has a playground program as well. I recall him telling me that he takes his athletes down to a local park to work out. Nice thing about that... NO RENT!!! That is a huge expense.

And here in northern minnesota, training outside at 30 below in the winter will toughen up the sissies, too. LOL
