Because of an injury to my collarbone about 6 months ago I haven't been able to do any benching or overhead pressing movements. The only thing I can WO is my legs and back at full strength. I am afraid that I will develope imbalances if I continue to just WO the back, (I can do squats so I am not worried about the legs) but no chest, any suggestions?
I broke my collarbone on July 8th. I didn't require surgery and I was out of the sling about 3 weeks after (still wasn't able to lift my arm, but was out of the sling). I can do maybe 8 reps at around 90lbs of bench before I can feel it act up again, it just becomes tender and sore in the area. I was under the impression I would be 100% from the ortho when he saw me about a month after it happened, still comes back though. This is what the break looked like if that helps.
Have you talked to a doctor or a physiotherapist to ask what kind of exercises you can do? My wife hurt her back and has a herniated disk and she can perform some exercises for her lower back and abdomen.

well, he said pretty much play it by ear. Lay off of exercises that will be demanding of my shoulders and stuff. I understood that, but I was under the impression I would be back benching 225 by now, you know? When we put up the X-Ray about sept (not the one above, that is when it happened) you culd see the new bone growing around it, he said about 3 more weeks and it would be totally filled in with new bone.
Doctors won't compromise themselves by suggesting any workout routine, maybe for liability reasons. Do you have insurance that covers a visit to the physiotherapist? One session can give you a pretty good idea of what to.

Bill, I have full motion except when I bring the arm across my chest and try to pull tight, that gived me a little trouble. Not sure when you mean by bony alignment. It was messed up as you can see from xray but that pic of my that I posted is just all the new bone that grew around it.
NY- that's probably a good idea, I was just wondering if it was normal or not. Wouldn't hurt to make an appt, I guess.
it's right on the collarbone, my shoulder feels fine. I am able to put a bar with nearly 300 pounds on it across my back for squats, it's just the pressing movements that kill it with light weight after about 8 reps.
Also, I am able to do wide grip push ups without a problem, but when it is close grip, it starts to hurt, don't know if that will help.
You may have some rotational problems with your clavicle, but my money is on a problem with your subclavius. It's a tiny muscle under your clavicle. If you can slide a finger under your clavicle near the fracture sight, it will be tender. Let me know.
Bill-
Do you think I should be 100% by now or so you think there is a chance I just need to give it more time to heal up? From what it sounds like, you're thinking there is something wrong?
It depends. Most adults heal in about 8 weeks or so. If you have deformity or shortening of the clavicle because the bone was displaced then shoulder function is altered. This can restrict shoulder movement and cause ongoing pain with exercise and certain movements. I'm also assuming that there is no non-union (the bones don't heal together). It may also be something as simple as poor mobility. Can't tell via forum. See your doc.
