i found this really cool new exercise with a twist.
you jump in shark infested waters, and then try and swim out of there as fast as you can without getting eaten.

Did you know that this is a very common method of exercise? I'd hazard a guess that about 80% of the people on this board do some form of interval training. Stopping suddenly after vigorous exercise is a pretty well documented "no, no" but don't take my word for it...do a little research and see what you come up with. It's much safer to vary the speeds from brisk walk to hard run.
Welcome to the boards.

HAHAHAHA. That would be very effective! IF you survived.

No. True HIIT wouldn't have you resting in between the sprints. What you would do is coast on the treadmill. Essentially speeding up for the sprints for around a portion of that 1-minute; slow down to coast for the rest of the minute - begin again.
Or, if you wanna do boxing rounds (which is what I do when I jump rope): intense for 3-minutes; coasting for 1-minute.

Well pin a rose on your nose.
I said essentially. By that I meant "not exactly but fairly close." I apologize for not making that very clear. I am smarter than you think.

HIIT, doesn't have to be slowing down, it can be a stop.
As being an ex boxing coach, real boxing rounds are 3 on 1 off, but that means 1 minute of doing nothing to recover for the next round. So when I had my guys skipping, they were allowed to get water then go back and stand in their spot and wait for the bell.

Do you have proof? It is done all the time in lots of sports. Ie hockey, skate hard as you can for 1 minute then sit on the bench, same as football, hard for a few seconds, then stand on the sideline, boxing, etc.

^ is an overreaction on my part. Don't like being dismissed.

What I learned is that Active Recuperation is better..and that the Montréal Canadiens would do better if they had stationary cycles instead of benches ! (well.. better physically anyways.. but we all agreed that it would look crazy)
In xc-skiing and mountain hike.. I stop completely.. either to drink or because I just need to.. never had any problems with it.

Incidentally an effort you can sustain for 3 min isn't really high intensity - that would be something that burned you out in 30sec or less. HIIT is based on the Tabata protocol which is 20secs on 10sec off. And four minutes of that is meant to leave you on the floor.
Longer periods are still interval training , and there is nothing wrong with that, but not really HIIT.
I occasionally do HIIT, but the mainstay of my energy system work is two or three minute rounds alternating bag work and skipping - as hard as I can for the first minute and last 10 seconds of every round. It's very demanding but not the same as HIIT.
Ps I have 2 and 3min boxing timers on MP3 if anyone wants them? With warning buzzers before the bell and at the one minute marks? I also have them with backing tracks if you want to risk my taste in music.

If you do this before breakfast it burns 520% more fat from you stomach then if you do it after breakfast. Also, dont eat after 5pm the previous day for best results.
