So I think I might want to compete in the near future?
The thought of competing really gets me excited. I've never done anything like it and I am talking a long way down the road(maybe another year when Im 21, and over 175 lbs hah) but I am really considering it after I maxed out today on 2 of the big 3. I hit 295 on bench, and 495 on deadlift, both lifts raw with not form of gear at a weight of 175. I know I have a long way to go but I am really considering this. Anyone know of where to find out when local competitions would be? I live in Orlando, FL right now while I am at school and I am really considering getting serious about this not to far from now. Any info would be greatly appretiated. The thought of a long term competition will drive me harder and harder.

Nothing specific, but I just wanted to say, A+ for thinking about competing. It that will make you focus, strive, and push a lot more. Go for it...

Damn, those are some impressive lifts for that weight class. You could compete now, just run a search for powerlifting meets in your area. If you want to compete, find a meet and train for it. Don't worry about gear or placing or anything like that, just find a meet and participate and go from there. And learn stuff.
Here ya go.

if you're serious about competing, you need to know that a lot of powerlifting is about gear, so if you want to get numbers to be with the highest people, you're going to have to get used to gear... or, join a fed that uses very minimal gear.
But i agree... for your first competition, i would either lift "raw" or in a pair of briefs... it'll give you a feeling of competing. I plan to enter one sometime early next year.

Raw Powerlifting is growing, which I love, I really don't have any desire to use gear personally.

eh, i don't know if it's really growing.
the problem is powerlifting is that there are a thousand different feds people can join with a thousand different sets of rules. The easiest would be to have 2 feds, one geared, one w/o, but they will never do that b/c the people who run them refuse to compromise any of their rules.

On one of those websites there is a BP and DL contest comming to orlando Jan 27, seems like Id have to pay about 80 bucks to get registerred with the APF and the drugfree one and to register for the DL contest. Id probly aim to do it at the 181 weight class. Hrmmmmmm I might just research this a bit more. Thanks guys, just what I was looking for. ANd Alcoholiday, If I do a competition I'll do the frist one raw for sure. To get the feet wet, see if I am even cut out for this type of stuff. If I do it id probly just compete in the junior clas at 181 just in the DL.

You can spend all your time researching, but what would really help you is to go and observe that comp. Really watch how the judging is done and how the lifts are performed and what gear is being used.
Talk to the other power lifters in the audience. No research is better than actually watching a comp first. You might even find some future training partners there; the kind of training partners that are experienced PL competitors. Those are the best kind!

Don't sweat competing raw at a geared powerlifting meet. Who cares, get a number. It might be a good experience to go to a geared meet anyway, see some big boys move some big weights and learn. Raw lifters can certainly learn a lot from geared lifters, you still gotta be strong in the first place. And like Patricia said, if you're not sure, at least go to the meet and talk to some people.

I went to a USAPL Raw push/pull contest a few weeks ago (just went to watch, not compete). You've got a pretty good coefficient compared to some of the guys that were there. Find a local comp and go for it!

I decided Im going to do it.
http://www.powerliftingwatch.com/pow...arbell-classic
Im going to compete in the 181 class(currently 176), in the deadlift only, in the junior division(20-23, im 20). They dont drug test and allow unlimited gear, what kind of gear helps a deadlift, I cant really fathem it. Will compete raw(and natural hah), goal is to hit 530(495 currently). Going to document the training in my log. I really think this will help motivate my training to a new level.

good to hear it steve!
deadlift suits help the DLs. Also briefs. There are more suits for sumo pulling than conv. If you ever want to get into wearing gear, talk to AJ Roberts, and the guys over at Iron Gladiators. They know their stuff.

Well.... those and a belt obviously
The gear part depends a lot on your style of pulling. If you pull conv, just stick to a suit and a belt. Briefs just get in the way, Imo. Hell I can't even get to the bar when wearing briefs.
But that's just if you decide to start using gear.
