Default Conflicting Information

I recently purchases Magnificent Mobility and am very happy with the results so far, especially hip flexability. My question regards the one shoulder exercise in the program, "shoulder dislocates". In this movement you take a wide grip on a broom stick with your arms down and in front, then keeping straight arms rotate them over your head and behind your back, then reverse. This program is produced by Eric Cressey, an expert on shoulder issues. However, when Buk demonstrated this movement at last years' Summit, Bill Hartman almost had a stroke. Now for the first time in my 51 years I have a shoulder issue and I'm looking for advice. Is this a helpful movement or do I avoid it like a case of the clap?

Good question, Bill. I had the same thought the other week when viewing MM. I remember Bill H frowning on them, but others (Xfit crew, EC) promote the stretch. I'm interested to hear the rationale of each camp.

I remember Bill saying "there's a reason why they're called shoulder dislocates...."

I think that if you have shoulder flexibility like Buk, or apparently Eric (you mutant), then it is probably okay. If you have shoulders like mine you don't even need to try. I can't raise a stick to 45 degrees in front of my body!

I probably wouldn't recommend them for the same reason I don't recommend doing any behind the neck work (lat pulls or shoulder press) even though some people can do them and not get injured. Generally we know that they are pretty hard on the normal person's connective tissue.

JP, I assume that you've seen "Inside Out". Are there any rehab type exercises or is it mostly a prevention program?

I dunno, JP, I remember Bill pretty much telling Buk he shouldn't be doing them ... nor should anybody. I hope Bill and Eric jump on this one with their views. I 'd be interested in hearing too.

Always use a controversial or eye-catching title, aimed at your target audience. Think of it like an advertisement or headline.

"Shoulder Dislocates: Conflicting Information" would draw Eric and Bill like flies to... er, like bees to honey.

Guys,

Remember the person in question in that JP Fitness Summit DVD? He had freakish shoulder mobility; there was no reason for him to be doing them.

Compare that to the version in our DVD - where the arms are well out to the side. If you really think about it, is it that much different than what you get with the arm circles noted in Inside/Out?

I think there is a big difference between forcing ROM and grooving the ROM that is already there.

All that said, I'm not using them as much anymore - mostly because I've found better drills to use. MM Version 2.0, anyone?

I liked the first version. I guess that means I'll love the new and improved version.

I thought about "Cressey vs Hartman: Shoulder Wars" but didn't want to sound like I was trying to start one of "those" threads.

This would probably be one of the most boring reads in the whole world as you'll most likely find that we'll agree on most issues in regard to the shoulder.

You guys could spice things up a bit by finishing off with a pugel stick duel, or paintball or something. Whoever wins gets to take the "shoulder master title".

I'm afraid Kevin Wilk would get that title in most cases. Just ask Drew Brees.
