Default Lost 18lbs in 5 days....

...at survival training! :p Damn that sucked, never thought a stomach could growl for 3 days straight. Came back from the field as ripped as I've ever been at 181lbs, but damn I'm weak, gonna take a couple weeks to get some size and strength back. Can't wait to get back in the damn gym already!!

Please forgive me for not knowing, but are you in the military? Did you get/have to eat bugs and stuff?

Yes, I'm a navigator in the Air Force.

And I wish I would've found some bugs, it was too cold, no bugs or berries! 2 rabbits (split among 4 people), and 2 MRE's for 6 days.

Wow. You must be hungry, still. Glad you survived. And, I hope you never have to put it to the test. Especially with no bugs to snack on.

Man, that's not much food for a big guy for that long. Good on you for getting through it.

Hey dude -

I'm wondering how much muscle you think you lost, as well. Did you lose any? A lot? Not much? 18 lbs in 5 days is pretty fast. Just curious about how that affected your muscle.

Congrats by the way. That's hard work.

Remember, if trapped behind enemy lines, you can always eat the enemy. Probably the perfect balance of nutrients for the human body. MMMM, bad guy jerky.

Most of the research that Alwyn and Berardi have mentioned prove that it takes quite a bit to actually "lose" muscle and that a period of very low calories isn't as detrimental as most would think.

I really don't think I lost a TON of muscle. Hauling a 60lb pack during a shitload of hiking is pretty anabolic I guess. I'd guess about 8lbs of it was water, that was back within a day. But I've settled out about 10lbs lighter, probably a majority was fat, I don't really seem a whole lot smaller. But my strength was completely sapped. 225 x 5 reps of squats took almost everything out of me. Hopefully it won't take long to gain that back, I've heard strength comes back relatively quickly after a short layoff. Gaining the muscle back I think will take a little longer, I've been trying to be very careful with my diet since I got back from the field, I know my metabolism is down, and eating like I used to would lead to fat gain, esp. before I can get going in the gym again.
