the gov doesnt need to re-evaluate the system. People just need to follow it. Another words maybe they just need to do more to inform the public (more comercials, mags,ex.) then maybe we wont be the fattest nation ever.

That the opinion of a Dietitian to be.

Hehe. Right on. Another funny thing, the government also hired a group of scientists to conduct a study to see if the majority of Americans are overweight and out-of-shape...SUPRISINGLY they found that they are. All they had to do is look out the damn window. It's hard to pick out too many individuals these days that don't have a few pounds to lose. Here in San Antonio the conditions are really bad. We've been the FATTEST city in the U.S a few years in a row now. Too much Mexican food, not enough exersize.

P.S: Does anyone have a link that says how many servings each piece of fruit or vegetable equal to? I've always consumed about 6-7 pieces of fruit a day, along with a few cups of vegetables daily. I was just wondering how many servings, say, an apple or banana equal. I know it isn't just one.
Thank ya.

Ok so the BEST part of that article has to be....

First they say this....
"The new guidelines also encourage people to eat whole fruits and vegetables rather than fruit and vegetable juices."

Hmm, but how much should I eat?

"The committee recommended cups rather than serving sizes in many instances; by this measure, the average person would need 4 1/2 cups of fruits and veggies to maintain his or her weight."

Whew 4 1/2 cups that seems like a lot...

"Let's say you drink a serving of orange juice, you eat a banana, you have a salad with one of your meals, and at dinner, you have a vegetable," Earl said. "I'll bet you're at close to 4 cups already, if not more. The important thing is to move consumers in the right direction."

Ohh, ok so..HEY WAIT A MINUTE! They just told me not to drink fruit juices! I guess I'll just go to taco bell.

Og.

I think you need to give our public servants (and I'm not being sarcastic here) a little more credit than than. The people that actually do the work at the FDA, HHS, etc., have been saying these things unofficially for a while now. When it came time for the higher-ups to make it official, they have always bowed to pressure from the food industry lobbies.

Sadly, it has taken this long for the problem to get bad enough for them to begin to stand up to them. I agree that the new guidlines are by no means perfect (note I said begin to stand up) but it's still an impovement over previous guidelines.
