Default I need help!

Hey folks,

I've been lurking on and off on this board for awhile now (I was one of the defector's from MH's boards). Anyways, I used the suggestions, programs, and nutrition advice on JPfitness.com about 3 years ago to work myself into pretty good shape. Unfortunately, that was 3 years ago and I'm no longer in shape. I'll spare you the excuses, but I'm coming here looking to right the ship.

Basically, I'm looking to you guys to point me in the direction of a good nutrition plan (posting a link to a good plan would suffice) and a good workout plan both with the initial goal of fat loss.

Some background on me is that I'm in my mid 20s and around 225 lbs. I play ice hockey a couple of times a week (come on...I'm from Canada, of course I play hockey). But other than that, I'm currently doing little else. I have a membership at a quality gym and some weights at home, so I'm open to workout programs either at home or at the gym.

Anyways, to make a long story short...help! Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

For a flexible training program that'll address changing goals, try "The New Rules of Lifting." The workouts are fairly simple, but they'll kick your ass.

For nutrition, I've heard good things about "The Metabolism Advantage" by John Berardi. While you're waiting for Amazon to deliver the book, take a look at the "Adam's Diet" sticky in the Nutrition Section.

Welcome.

Check out the Adam's Diet sticky at the top to the Diet, Nutrition section, several on here have had good success with it.

Welcome and congrats on your decision!

The single most important thing is to nail down where/when you will exercise. Scheduling regular routines and staying with it for life is the most important thing. If you got into shape a few years ago and then fell off the wagon, you might want to think about what happened and avoid that ever happening again.

Needs to be a lifestyle change. Not just a short term plan to get back into shape. Otherwise, you'll keep yo-yo-ing.

Good luck!

What svd201 said.

NROL and Adam's Diet would be a great combination to meet your fat loss goals.

Thanks for the welcome and suggestions folks! I've been a bit busy the past few weeks since the original post (too busy to check the forums, not to work out I've picked up The Metabolism Advantage -- Berardi's fantastic --, met with a personal trainer who's got me on a program consisting of alternating full body workouts based on supersets, gotten back into running (slowly, but I'm glad to see the miles adding up), adjusted my diet based on advice in the Berardi book as well as a trip to the supermarket with my trainer which educated me on the good, the bad and the ugly of the grocery store.

Anyways, sorry for the run on sentence there, but there's been some good stuff happening. But to save the best for last, I'm down about 5 lbs since the original post and much more full of energy...

@Jimbo

You're absolutely right about assessing what happened to put me back in this position. Most of it relates to poor eating habits and laziness. But at the moment I'm working out at 7am (which was unheard of a couple of months back...getting up at 7am that is) and actually looking forward to going to the gym.

In any case, I've been wanting to run a major 10 mile road race here in the city for years, and this year I've got it circled on my calendar...8 months and counting. The race is the goal, the healthier me will hopefully be the result.
