My 1st ART session
I had to share this - I just got back from my 1st ART session and it pretty much feels like someone shredded my R. knee, glute, adductors and foot - but in a good way. I went for discomfort in the knee and foot and also to get some advice on my imbalances. (JP and Standapart, you were right that my glute med was not firing properly and it seems to be a big piece of the puzzle with my imbalances.)
Anyway, the session was only for an hour but I got an extra hour for free since the practitioner said she was having fun and was excited to work with me! I learned my left leg is performing nicely but is weak; right leg is strong but only because everything is trying to support its incorrect form. I got some exercises and movements to help things out, along with foam rolling instructions. While some of the info was a repeat of what I've read on this site, it helped to have someone show me some of the rolling techniques and it definitely helped to have someone walk me through the correct form for my funky right leg.
What was crazy about the experience was learning I don't use my right big toe when I walk (who knew?) and also getting mobility back in my foot that I didn't even realize was missing to begin with.
Can't wait to save up for a follow up appointment. All in all, a great experience. (We'll see if my body still feels just as enthusiastic tomorrow...)

ART is the work of the devil.......as Cosgrove told me, you need to be in serious pain to decide to get ART done on you. I concur...I have been going twice a week for the past few weeks.

You know, the truth is, I really didn't know what I was getting into. I got a reference and discount through a coworker for a biomechanics/ART session and jumped on the chance to have a pro check things out. Dos, I can't believe you go twice a week! I figure I need at least a week to get over the shock alone.
So JP and Dos, when you go do you work on specific issues or is it a full body experience?

Mine started out as a hip issue with some nerve damage....had numbness on the surface of my leg...low back issues stemming from the hip flexor etc. Started feeling better and then tore my hamstring being STUPID. Been going back ever since...now the hip / numbness is secondary to the hammy.
I just lay there feeling this guy push his fingers about 3 inches into my gracilis and THEN put me through an extreme stretch with said fingers doing their magic.....the whole time I'm thinking "I can't believe I'm fucking paying this guy to do this shit.."

I get ART for a wrist issue. I have "de quervains" in my left wrist. I was given a topical by my DR. which didn't do anything. Surgery is an option.
Hartman suggested ART, so I gave that a shot. I went a couple times a week initially. I got a combination of ART, Graston and even a little nerve flossing.
I go once every 6 weeks now and as for improvement it was slow and sometimes I have a hard time thinking it did anything, but then all I have to do is compare wrist now with wrist back when I started going.
Could not front squat because I could not bend the wrist back. Now any issues I have with the FS have nothing to do with the wrist. I can bench press without discomfort. Hell before I couldn't even wipe my ass with my left hand. I'd say I have 90% improvement in this issue through these methodologies. No cutting involved.
I would personally have not trouble recommending it to anyone.

How do you find an ART practitioner? Are there any certain schools or certifications that I should look for? Just listening to you talk about this makes me want to check it out. I already have a chiropractor and a decent massage person, but this sounds like what the Dr. ordered!
Thanks
Joel

Sounds interesting.. How much did this end up costing you if you dont mind me asking? I have blue cross insurance, but I dont think its covered. I would love to get my shoulders and elbow looked at.

I believe it is $55 a session, it's more but the alberta government covers it so that it's only $55. There is an upper cap though, and I am not sure what that is.
It is a little cheaper as a student. $35 or $45. I go to Sheppard Health in Kensington.
I initially went twice a month or something like that. I put down a fair bit of cash, but in the end I didn't have to get cut open so I am cool with that.
