Question

Hi guys - some background. I've been training with weights faithfully since Dec 1, 2002 - taking a week off every 8 weeks or so. My next rest week is in 4 weeks. (I've done primarily professionally written programs that have been done by and are well known to many members of this board. )

I am considering getting a pool membership for the summer (beginning around May 15) and using swimming as my primary exercise for about three months, and not lifting weights during that period (I believe it's Ian King who might call it "strategic deconditioning").

My motivation is partly that I think it will be fun and simply a pleasant change to swim on a regular basis, and I think trying to do that *and* lift is just too much for me. So I'm thinking about swimming laps three times a week instead of lifting.

I'm thinking my overall conditioning will at least maintain and possibly improve, although my strength will obviously decrease somewhat. But, I'm also thinking that when I return to the gym in late August, I may get some newbie-like gains and really rejuvenate my whole program.

I apologize for rambling, but does anyone have any thoughts? (I realize it's a personal decision, but I'm just looking for some knowledgeable insight as well on some pros and cons I may not have thought of.)

If you love swimming do it. Not lifting for three months, and doing alot of cardio, will be catabolic and you will lose muscle.

Now, if a swimmer's body is the look you're after, then sounds great. If not, then I would rethink your plan.

If it were me, I'd do it. You have a whole lifetime to get your gains back, and taking a break will keep you more interested in lifting in the long run.

Sounds like something you really want to do, so i say definately do it!
