Default 2 new things I've seen in the last day

First was a gym with no barbells. I'm travelling for work atm so went to check out a gym and while they had pictures on the wall describing how to do squats/deadlifts/bench/etc there wasnt a barbell in the entire place. Some dumbells and a lot of machines was all.

Second was a guy doing heavy squats. I think I've only ever seen 2 other people do squats and neither of them was moving anywhere near a heavy weight (or using good form). This guy worked up to about 350lbs with good form. I left before he got going, but it looked like he was setting up for deadlifts at about the same weight when I left. If I had stuck around and he did that would have been the first time I've seen anyone deadlift heavy. This was obviously at a gym I found that did have barbells . A fairly good setup for what was basically a shiny commercial gym.

Wow!

I saw a girl doing the leg press while reading a book. Not during rests, but during the extercise. The weight was so low I could have done a "hand press."

A gym with no barbells? Weird. I'd like to open a gym for females that doesn't have any machines...or limited machines. Women need to get out of Curves and get into a different frame of mind. Barbells are not only for men.
And girl reading book while training will not be seen there. She is welcome so she can learn, but she has to leave the book at home

Glad you had better luck at the second gym Ben.

That is awesome. I never thought of reading while doing weights.

Certainly makes me glad that I workout at home ... no machines (except my elliptical) ... and no airheads!!! I would love a Gravitron though so I can work on my pull-ups ... any idea if they make a home version?

You can use Jump Stretch bands as your assist.

This article has a picture of a band assisted pull-up and some information on Jump Stretch bands.

It's not a gym if it has no barbells. Period.
