I'm wondering, have you people considered using Trap bars instead of Olympic bars (or other "straight" bars) for your deadlifts? If you have, but you decided not to use them, could you tell why? Some people (e.g. the authors of "Scrawny to Brawny") consider them more "ergonomic" in some cases, and they don't hurt your shins. If you are not training for competition (in events in which a Olympic bar is required), I believe Trap bars are a better option. What do you people think?

I can't comment on the difference in the lifts from bar to bar, but my biggest concern would be cost. My current bar is about $400 and I certainly would not want to spend that on a trap bar since it's really only used for a few lifts.
Plus, A barbell is the roots of lifting and something that I don't think should be changed. This is nothing that is not "ergonomic" when it comes to a straight bar if the lift is performed correctly. The trap bar would just allow you to lift a bit more weight.

I think the use of Trap bars would move some of the emphasis off of the posterior chain and more onto the quads

I've read that it is supposed to work your muscles in a more isometric way than conventional deadlifts, but I don't fully understand that unless it means less force on the lower back since the weight is centered vs. being slightly forward at the start of the lift.
Anyone?

Extracted from "Scrawny to Brawny", p.44:
"The major difference between parallel grip [dumbbell, trap bar] and conventional deadlift is that with the former, because the weight is held next to your body as opposed to in front of it, it enables you to remain much more upright. This means much less forward lean and much greater quad activation. So much so, in fact, that the parallel grip deadlift is preferred by some over their squat as their primary lower body lift."
