Default First place to start in becoming a PT?

Hey all,

I frequently post on a poker message board, and in their Off Topic section there are a lot of posts about getting in shape and diet etc. These guys are really clueless, and I enjoy answering their questions with the fundamental knowledge of lifting/diet that I've gained from lurking various forums (menshealth, JPfitness, T-mag, ruggedmag), books (book of muscle), magazines, and being in the gym.
As I'm sitting here at "work" I was thinking how much more satisfying it would be to be working with begginers in showing them to improve their physical condition. I am by no means a "meat-head" and my approach to lifting is very much driven by trying to understand WHY something works, or WHY I should do something differently. I enjoy explaining these kind of things to people who feel lost when it comes to them, and feel that I would be able to connect with them pretty well.
I advise most of my friends on lifting/diet issues when they ask, and when they work out with me they always comment on how effective the different exercises and routines we do are.

What is the first step I should take, or direction I should head in for becoming a personal trainer? I'm 21, almost done with college (business degree), and live in southern california.

thanks

The first step depends on your knowledge level, how is your anatomy and physiology? Does your school have an exercise science program? if so is it too late to get a minor? I got my certification through here http://www.nsca-cc.org/ and once I finish my degree I'll get my CSCS through them. Also some community colleges have personal trainer programs and you should find a reputable local gym that does interships which will also get you some experience and knowledge.

This has been discussed a few times in here. Check this out...

Starting my quest for certification

Also...and this may be more in-depth information than you are currently looking for, but it has a great list of resources and ideas for what to do to move ahead in the business if you decide you would like to pursue it further... http://www.ericcressey.com/recommendedresources.html

I am getting ready to study for the NSCA-CPT. I hear it's one of the best certs to have.
