Default What's a good nutrition book to get?

Can anyone recommend a good nutrition book? I don't want any book that goes by FDA standards and that dumb pyramid they have. I know some about nutrition but would like to learn more.

Oh yeah, I'm also not looking for any kind of diet book. I need to gain weight, so a book about gaining or sports nutrition would be nice. Mainly I just want a healthy diet.

If anyone has any recommendations, please share.

Thanks in advance.

There are so many directions that you can go. It depends on what your goals are, too. Family friendly nutrition is a far cry from the "perfect nutritional lifestyle."

I'm not a big fan of The Abs Diet, per se. But it does do pretty decent job of telling you what's good and what's bad. It's way too gimicky and orange for me. But, in general, it advocates whole grains, lots of veggies, fruits, healthy fats, and lean protein sources. It has a lot of recipes, too. Even a follow up cookbook, I think.

Most nutrtion books are "diet books." The Sonoma Diet and South Beach Diet are both moderate carb diets that emphasise all the right foods. They can both fit pretty closely with an eating style that MOST people can deal with.

Wanna get all perfect and optimum (my opinion)? The Paleo Diet for Athletes is a great book that explains how our modern diets aren't doing us any favors.

John Berardi has a nutrition book coming out next week. The Metabolism Advantage. Obviously, I haven't read it, but Beradi REALLY knows his nutrition.

Scrawny to Brawny - Mejia workouts and Berardi nutrition. Can't beat that.

Default good book on nutrition

"Eat Drink, and be Healthy" by Willett, from Harvard summarizes all the major good health and nutrition studies. He is very opposed to the old gov't pyramid. He has studiously avoided particular diet controvesies. When I read his book about 5 years ago the startling things to me were: It's OK to go up to 40% fat, good fats that is; white starches should be eaten only rarely, whole grains OK; eat some but watch portions of fruit; abundant veggies.

What was and is useful is his presentation of the scientific studies in the various areas of food, fats, carbs, protein, soybean etc. He is prissier than most of us regarding red meat, otherwise pretty good. And this year's update, "Eat Drink and lose Weight" does not appear to have any real changes in his recommendations. I rec. the ED and be Healthy, available on line, and probably used at Powells. Rob

Has anyone heard of The Powerfood Nutrition Plan by Susan Kleiner? I saw that on Amazon while looking at MMP a few weeks back.

I read a little on Amazon and it didnt look terrible, but that's hard to judge from just a few pages.

I've read some nutrition and health books by Andrew Weil. I liked most of what he had to say. He had a very good way of explaining things in my opinion.

I second JB's Precision Nutrition. Go over to his site at www.johnberardi.com and read all his free articles as well. PN come with the 2 DVDs the 2 audio CDs, Gourmet Nutrition cookbook, and then the rest of the information in a binder. A great resource and worth every penny. But, if you're looking for some free stuff, Berardi's articles are kick-ass.

I'll chime in on Berardi's Precison Nutrition as well - It's solid.....It works. It's not a textbook, so don't expect lots of biochemistry or nutritional science. Just read it and do it.

Yep, excellent information here. I'd also look into JB's new book that comes out Sept 5th.

1. Can't go wrong with Berardi
2. I also like all of Lyle McDonald's books (specifically The Ketogenic Diet and A Guide to Flexible Eating).
3. DiPasquale's "Anabolic Solution" has some good info.
4. Natural Hormonal Enhancement by Rob Faigin is a GREAT read.
5. BodyOpus by Dan Duchaine is pretty much the precursor to most of McDonald's stuff (as well as any targeted ketogenic diet).

Not a big of fan of Susan Kleiner at all. I wouldn't recommend her books.

I read and tried Body Opus years ago... Pretty intense diet. It's hard enough doing a keto diet, but setting your alarm in 3 hour increments to keep food flowing into you was a little wacko. I also always blew it on the "re-feed" days.

I just read Nutrient Timing, great book. Short, but sweet. Obviously primarily focuses on peri-workout nutrition, but some great diet info as well.

Anabolic Nutrition will probably be my next nutrition book.

A new book by Susan Kleiner is coming out on November:

Power Eating, 3rd edition

You can take a look at the description for the 2nd edition here.

I would pass on Kleiner's book. The other recommendations that were made are pretty good.

I'll third Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy, by Dr Willett. In terms of a general book for healthy eating that everyone can get something out of, it's very good. It's probably the most thoroughly scientifically backed-up nutrition/cookbook around, and Dr. Willett is probably the most important nutrition researcher in the country.
