Question The Modified 5x5 Squat Program, By Mike Robertson

http://www.t-nation.com/readTopic.do?id=1206566

Seems like a pretty solid program for boosting squat strength, and I seem to fit the description of the trainee for whom this program is geared.

A quick question:

Is it necessary to use a belt where MR calls for it? I currently don't have one at my disposal, and I'd like to avoid the purchase if possible.

IMO, belts should only be used for max lifts.

Incidentally, I tried using a belt a few weeks ago on deads, and I found it got in my way more than it helped.

I just finished the article. Mike writes excellent programs. He does compete though, so my opinion is that you could do the program without the use of a belt at all. It never gets over 85% of your 1RM. But you could always ask the question of Mike himself over at T-Nation. He's a great guy and I'm sure would help you out.

Lisa and Steve, that's what I suspected, seeing as the max load in the program is 85% 1RM. Maybe I'll ask at T-Nation just to be safe...

Mike does check in, but I'm not sure he'd see this thread. You could send him a pm though. He'd get that for sure.

Milkman -

Figured I'd just answer this here...

It's all about what you're comfortable with; if you're using that kind of load sans belt, than go for it. I was really pushing my loading for cycle-to-cycle, so I felt more comfortable using the belt.

Again, it's all about preference and what you're comfortable with. Let me know how it works for you!

Stay strong
MR
