Sometimes I Feel So Uninspired
3:45 am the alarm goes off. I wake up. Time to get to the gym. Or so I thought. I can't get myself out of bed to go. This has been going on for the summer, I don't know if it's a seasonal thing. I've been to the gym once in the last 2 weeks. I know, pathetic. But I just can't seem to motivate myself to get there. And I like working out, I like lifting. The "how" and the "where" are not the problem - I seem to have lost the "why?"
Oh well, semi-rant over. Any words of advice/kicks in the ass are welcomed.

I have no idea what your schedule is like, but have you considered changing it up and going in the afternoon? If I made plans to workout in the morning, I'd probably run into the same issues.

I actually like going in the morning. The gym is empty, no fighting for use of the equipment and I can get through a workout uninterrupted in 35-40 minutes. I could never get that done in the afternoon-evening, the gym is too crowded.

I do know that I need motivation to do morning workouts.
Perhaps switching up the time might work. Do you have any goals right now?

Sometimes you just have to build that routine again. Determine to be there. Just do it. Once you've done it regularly for a couple of weeks it will feel good again. You'll enjoy youself once you get there. If you can plan to meet someone it helps a whole lot with the commitment to get up and get going. Getting up and leaving the house is the hard part!
Put the alarm clock in the bathroom so that you have to get out of the bed to turn it off.

Wow, 3:45 AM!! And I thought spec ops guys get up early! I suggest trying to switch it up. Most gyms aren't that crowded except for like 4-7 in the afternoon, just avoid those times.

I feel your pain OldGuy. I personally like the morning workout. I like what it does for me during the day and I like the idea that I have been to the gym/pool/bike before most people are even out of bed.
Despite that when I wake up at 5am...no matter how awake I am something inside still knows its 5am and it's a bit of a struggle to get there.
I wish I had an answer for you on how to get to the gym early everyday, but frankly all I can do is let you know that you are not alone.

I guess the main goal right now is to get to the gym consistently. But you know, the usual goals - get stronger, lose some fat (I already look good nekkid ). I don't really have a short term goal in mind, and I look at working out as a lifestyle goal, one that I'll keep doing for the rest of my life.
Hmmm, maybe that's it. Set a goal for the short term.

We all go through a slump every now and then. I was in one for a couple of weeks. Just couldn't go, but kept telling myself that I wanted to go.
I finally accepted that I was burned out, and needed a change. I switch my routine around, forced myself to go and now....slump is gone!
I think we all tend to get bored at times, and that is our body's way of sayoing that a change is needed.

I agree with Lisa, try something new at the gym. Maybe try one of the kick boxing classes with all the cute little 20 somethings working out around you. That should be motivation enough to get your butt up and going in the morning. Something that works well for me is the give and take method. If I miss a scheduled workout I have to give up one of my cheat meals for the week. Since I only have 2 I have to be damn near dead before I'll miss a workout and give up pizza or ribs. If you hit all your workouts for the week give yourself a non food reward on the weekend for a job well done.

Put your alarm clock on the other side of the room. You have to get up and walk around to shut it off... may as well stay up and go to the gym!

Build yourself a set-up like these Japanese dudes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyjWdfKKRU4 ,and when you wake up in the morning at 3:45AM (Sweet Jesus, man!) you have two options:
1) Go to the gym and workout.
2) Stand up there and take a lick.
You'll be working out like never before. You could also use it as negative reinforcement if you had a crappy/lazy workout- just come home and step up to the plate, champ.

Set up an entirely new routine. One that will give you a week off from the gym every 8 weeks or so and that also changes. I found if you are constantly doing the same thing over and over you are bound to get bored.

New to this Forum thing!
I can relate to being unispired!
If I dont get it over with in the morning, it a real chore.
AND forget it if its not a class, and if the instructor and music's not good. Of course thats a matter of personal preference.
I have to be totally motivate all the way around...then its ON!
I'm really feakinking right now!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm totally out of commission; I just had spinal (C567) surgury and cant do any thing for at least 8 weeks: or more...I went from 3 classes and one personal day ...
too
out on disab for 1 month waiting for surgery ...four classes and walking the beach everyday to .....nothing.....
oh my G-d...not only am I not allowed, it hurts!!!
I'll probably be out a total of 6 months from work, I better not be out of the gym that long!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let me tell you guys, it frustrating being not able to and wanting too all at the same time!!!!!

Jenn has two young kids and she finds the time to lift more often and heavier than you.
Try to change that.
There's your motivation.
