I think its a sin to not have smarties (or M and Ms for you americans!) in your trailmix. Thats what makes it.

Good show guys!!

They kick ass, and to keep carbs really low, I made mine without the cranberries, still tasted great!

ALso I used walnuts instead of cashues because I forgot what kind of nut I needed besides Almonds when I was shopping. Still tasted great.

I have been telling John that he deserves his own Cooking show. He would be a great host and his recipes rock!

Anyone tried grinding the almonds first? Seems that it might help make more of a bar than a lumpy, peanut-brittle type thing...

Is anyone else having trouble downloading the show?

I have tried all night. If not, I guess it may be my internet connection. I can get everything else however.

Thanks

Not just yet. I made a batch of chili and hard boiled a couple dozen eggs... so the protein bars are next on the list

The actual download link comes up blank every single time and the Google Video conks out half way through. I am thinking it may be my connection since no one else is having problems and I am with both links. I was just checking to see first before I tried to fix it on this end.

Thanks

Smarties in Canadia must be something else.

We have them, too. But, this is what they look like...

They're like Sweet Tarts. Not good in trail mix.

Kevin and John,

That was great. Shows how easy it is to make the protein bars.

I'm watching from the Cafe in Whole Foods Market. I just went and picked up some nuts for some cooking tonight, after watching.

Kevin's right, you could have cooking show!

Those are called 'rockets' in canada.
Smarties are just like regular M and M's. They are good in trail mix.

yeah but adding smarties wouldn't really keep the carbs on the lower end of the scale.....

The bars are pretty good! I'm allergic to walnuts and possibly cashews (not something I really want to test), so I stuck with

2 cups almonds
+ 2 scoops (1/2 cup) vanilla whey
+ 2 scoops (1/2 cup ON vanilla casein)
+ 1 cup egg whites

I might have overbaked just a bit, as they are somewhat rubbery... but still pretty darn good. I'm gonna tweak around the recipe a bit but this is something I'll definitely add to the regular rotation!

I did this...

1 oz cashews
1 oz sesame seeds
1 oz pepitas (shelled pumpkin seeds)
2.5 scoops Pro-Rated Alpine Vanilla
2 whole eggs

Tastes good. A little rubbery. I don't think I cooked it quite long enough. More nuts, next time.

Nice editing, Kevin!

I hope you guys enjoy these bars. Once you get the hang of the cooking time (no rubbery bars), then you can throw these things together in no time.

They're also very versatile, as Lost Dog has shown by already providing an alternative recipe.

And thanks for the kind words. I'm much more critical of myself, and I can tell that this was the first episode we shot, since I'm stumbling over my words and otherwise looking uncomfortable. I got more of the hang of it, though, so subsequent episodes should be much better.

Besides that, I can't believe how skinny I've become I knew I lost a lot of muscle after the broken ankle, but watching my sorry ass on these videos has given me a newfound resolve to lift heavy and eat like a horse.

Time for some experimentation. Last night, I picked up some other ingredients. Not sure how I'm going to incorporate them...

unsweetened, dried cherries
unsweetened, dried coconut flakes
raw cashews
raw pepitas
sesame seeds
golden flax seeds
cocoa powder

I'm going to head over to Trader Joe's for some almonds and walnuts (1/2 the price of Whole Foods).

Also, TJ's has bags of dried apple rings (not chips). I usually chop them and stir them into oatmeal, but I'm envisioning some cinnamon apple bars tonight!

Good call with the cherries and coconut, LD. I bet that would be good with some chocolate protein powder and almonds.

Nice work and those bars look great! Some tricks of the trade: For easier editing next time spend more camera time on the food and less on the cook. That way if you mess up the audio is much easier to edit. Also, take some shots of the food in different stages along the way (when the cook is taking a break) and you can use that to help editing as well. Even the pros rarely get it right all the way through

I just made some...

3/4 cup egg whites
1 cup chocolate whey
1 cup almonds
1 cup walnuts
1 cup coconut

Delicious! I'll definately be packing these into my lunch box from now on. I might also put some splenda in the next batch to appease my wife.

Good show!! I am inspired to finally make some of these bars. I never seem to get around to it - but I know they have to be far better than the garbage ones in the stores.

Aw Dave! I was sure you were already making homemade protein bars out of all those nuts and berries you gather mixed together with some protein powder! I am so disappointed in you! :p

Oh, and good job guys! Great show.
