What an eye opening education in a single article. Great work, John.
Thanks.

Mike and John,
I found this, while poking around.
Grape Expectations: The Resveratrol Story
Quote:
|
A fluid ounce of red wine averages 160 µg of resveratrol, compared to peanuts, which average 73 µg per ounce [6]. Since wine is the most notable dietary source, it is the object of much speculation and research.
|
I don't even know what a µg is! How does one compare µg with, say "
Resveratrol [from whole red grape ( Vitis vinifera)] 20 mg" that you might see on a supplement label.
I'm not planning to down a bottle of wine, every night, since too much alcohol ALSO can lead to lowered testosterone levels, but I am curious about these measurements.

Okay. Google does know everything. It just likes to toy with us...
1 gram (g) = 1000 milligrams (mg) = 1000000 micrograms (µg)
So, if I'm doing my math correctly (unlikely), one would have to drink 125 oz of red wine to get that 20mg of Resveratrol in the supplement that I found. Is that right?
Hmm... That's really only 5 bottles of red. Perhaps grappa is a better avenue.

a question about xenoestrogens leaching out from plastic bottles. Would keeping harsh substances contained in plastic water bottles cause more xenoestrogens to leak into the fluid? When I say harsh substances i mean liquids like vinegar and alcohol.

Fats can leach them, I wonder about vinegar.
I noticed that Canola Oil only comes in plastic bottles. Olive can come in glass, but I use a lot of canola oil. This isn't good.

I drink Gatorade and water bottles like its my job. Since, they never boil for 30 minutes, I'm assuming they're chill. I'm not going to stop using plastics, I dont heat stuff in plastic anyway, but definitely a great interview that gets ya thinking. Nice job Mike and Johnka!
BTW, I've enjoyed ur emag Mike

I've become so aware of plastics now. It's everywhere. The canola oil thing ticks me off. I'd been using it a lot, since it has no flavor. But, since I can't find it in glass, I'm moving on to extra light olive oil.
All sorts of things bug me now. Especially since it was pointed out that fats can leach the xenoestrogens more than other substances. Yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese, lunch meat, raw meat, cooked meat, margarine (my favorite was Canola margarine w/no hydrogenated fats), etc., etc. all come in plastic containers.
I'm still using ziplocks for cutup veggies and things like that. I'm hoping that cold and non-fatty foods aren't much of an issue with plastics...
Aside from switching to glass from plastic, things aren't too tough.
- Ball mason jars instead of tupperware for work food
- Sobe Lean glass bottles for ice tea and supershakes in the cooler instead of plastic bottles
- Glass bowls and foil instead of tupperware and/or plastic wrap at home
- In the microwave, an inverted plate covers a bowl instead of plastic wrap
- I still use some nalgene bottles, but since my shakes all have a lot of fat in them, I'm trying to cut back on that, too. More Sobe bottles in my future
Am I obsessed? I don't know. It's pretty easy to avoid the plastics, now. And, I shouldn't eat a lot of the stuff that you find in plastic, anyway.

LD,
First off the pastrami quote in your sig is awesome! I loved that episode. I have many of the same changes that you have in regards to eliminating plastics from my nutritional life. You should look into spectrum oils as their canola oil comes in a glass bottle. I've started using Sigg water bottles and they are great

Well, those bottles certainly look better (and less weird) than reusing Sobe bottles.
Thanks for the tips!
